(Move Our Hearts To) Remember

psalmshymnsspiritualsongskjv

This is the Body that was torn for us
This is the Blood that was spilt
Points to the pain You endured for us
Points to the shame, the blame, the guilt

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, come…
move our hearts to remember

This is the Lamb who was slain for us
So we, the Church, may enter in
So bittersweet when we think of You
The One who bore our curse, our sin

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, come…
move our hearts to remember

Sometimes, we forget.  (And how could we forget?)  But we do.  (I don’t know how…but we do.)  We forget our Suffering Savior.  We forget His hurt and tortured and bruised Body.  We forget His spilled Blood.  And I think that our Lord knew we would forget; remember what He said to His beloved apostles as He shared His final meal with them?

Then He took a loaf [of bread], and when He had given thanks,
He broke [it] and gave it to them saying,
This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.
Luke 22:19

Undoubtedly, those twelve men had no idea what Jesus was communicating to them.  But within a few days, they knew.  Perhaps, they also asked God to move their hearts to remember.

Paul also caused the believers in Corinth to remember:

For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you,
that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said,
“This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying,
“This cup is the new covenant in My blood;
do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup,
you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
1 Corinthians 11:24-26

There are many, oh-so-very-many, reasons for us to remember what Jesus accomplished through His sacrificial death on the Cross. Here are just a few.

Lord,…move our hearts to remember!

He himself bore our sins in His body on the Cross,
that we might die to sin and live to righteousness
1 Peter 2:24

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh,
God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,
having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness,
which stood against us and condemned us;
He has taken it away, nailing it to the Cross.
And having disarmed the powers and authorities,
He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the Cross.
Colossians 2:13-15

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse for us— for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”
Galatians 3:13

For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God
through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled,
shall we be saved by His life.
Romans 5:10-11

…Knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold
from your futile way of life inherited from your fathers,
but with precious Blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the Blood of Christ.
1 Peter 1:18-19

…Having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt
that stood against us with its legal demands. This He set aside, nailing it to the Cross.
Colossians 2:13-14

God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us,
so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 Corinthians 5:21

And we must intentionally remember because,

“…the message of the Cross is sheer absurdity and folly
to those who are perishing and on their way to perdition,
but to us who are being saved it is the manifestation of the power of God.”
1 Corinthians 1:18 AMP

These next few weeks (called Lent, in some churches) are an excellent time to determine to focus on Jesus’ sacrifice, and all that He went through (His betrayal, His trial, His torture, His crucifixion) leading up to His death and (oh! joy!) His Resurrection!  There are many things one can do to purposefully remember Jesus’ accomplishments, such as…

  • Read through Matthew chapters 26 and 27; Mark chapters 14 and 15; Luke chapters 22 and 23; John chapters 17 through 19
  • Download an app of a daily devotional focusing on Jesus’ last days. One suggestion would be the YouVersion of the Bible.
  • Listen to hymns and other Christian songs which help you to recognize and remember what Jesus went through. And sing your praise! (Perhaps make a playlist.)
  • Ask a loved one (a family member or a friend) to be your accountability partner during this time.
  • Watch a movie depicting this time period of our Lord’s final days.
  • And finally, but most importantly, pray…asking God through the Holy Spirit to help you to remember.  It is a prayer I know He will answer.

Roasted Apples and Sweet Potatoes

In my continuing quest to find new and yummy ways to serve more veggies, I have had some successes…and a few failures.  Like roasted cauliflower with a healthier spinach-artichoke dip topping.  Ummm, yeah…it did NOT come together on the plate like it did in my head.  But this—the Roasted Sweets and Apples—so yummy!

We enjoyed this alongside a roasted chicken.  This is healthy but-oh-so-yummy comfort food!   I prepared this for supper on the coldest day I think I have ever experienced…with the windchill factor, our temps never got out of the below zero range.  So when my husband walked in, I literally heard him say, ‘ahhhhh….’  (Made me happy, too!)

This recipe makes enough for leftovers.  We enjoyed this a day or two later for lunch accompanied with breakfast sausage and a nice, runny sunny-side up egg. However you serve it, I hope you and your loved ones enjoy it!

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

psalmshymnsspiritualsongskjv

Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of heaven, to earth come down;
Fix in us Thy humble dwelling;
All Thy faithful mercies crown!
Jesus, Thou art all compassion,
Pure, unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation;
Enter every trembling heart.

Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit
Into every troubled breast!
Let us all in Thee inherit;
Let us find that second rest.
Take away our bent to sinning;
Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its beginning,
Set our hearts at liberty.

Come, Almighty to deliver,
Let us all Thy life receive;
Suddenly return and never,
Nevermore Thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
Serve Thee as Thy hosts above,
Pray and praise Thee without ceasing,
Glory in thy perfect love.

Finish, then, Thy new creation;
Pure and spotless let us be.
Let us see Thy great salvation
Perfectly restored in Thee;
Changed from glory into glory,
‘Til in heaven we take our place,
‘Til we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
1 John 4:16

Since we just finished celebrating St. Valentine’s Day, we should not stop celebrating the Author of love, God our Father.  He wants to love us in a way that no human ever could. I was listening to a podcast earlier in the week, in which the person made a comment that caught my attention. He said,

“God wants us to love each other as He loved His Son.”

How many of us do that? Now, how many of us put our kids before our spouses? We should not do that!  We are to love our husbands the way we love our son or daughter.  Our children are important, but not more than our spouse.

Or even God….  God should always hold first place in our lives, our thoughts, and our actions. Then comes our spouse…and then our children. We may not have seen it modeled for us, but now we know.  With all that in order, our families would be okay. God will help us, all we have to do is ask for the help from the Holy Spirit.

*  ~  ♥  ~  ✞  ~  ♥  ~  *

Dear Father, as Charles Wesley wrote in his song, “Let us see Your great salvation perfectly restored in You; changed from glory into glory, ’til in Heaven we take our place, ’til we cast our crowns before You, lost in wonder, love, and praise.” We will one day stand before You. Let us never forget to love and to forgive as You have shown us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Love With Actions

SeekingHimLogo

This is how we know what love is:
Jesus Christ laid down His life for us.
And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
If anyone has material possessions
and sees a brother or sister in need
but has no pity on them,
how can the love of God be in that person?
Dear children, let us not love with words or speech
but with actions and in truth.
1 John 3:16-18 NIV

For the last few years our military men and women have been in other countries fighting for freedom.  Some have paid the greatest price—they have been killed in the line of duty.  Some of those who have served in the police departments and fire departments have also given their lives in doing their jobs.

Now we are hearing of people in the Church being martyred in other countries because of the persecutions occurring there.  This is what the verse is speaking of—“lay down our lives…”.  I pray that we would be brave and strong. And that we would stand up when we need to for our religious freedom.  That we would encourage our children to speak up when our God is being put down and not be embarrassed to speak about His glory.

When we see a brother or sister in Christ having trouble we should not hesitate to help them.  God will surely honor us in this act of kindness.   We will be changed when we do this.  We will understand the struggle of our fellow Christian as they share the struggle they have been through and we can usually offer sound advice. But we will be surprised at being blessed by the other person who shows how their faith has grown as they have gone through the struggle and hurt they have experienced.

“A new command I give you: Love one another.
As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
By this everyone will know that you are My disciples,
if you love one another.”
John 13:34-35

As Jesus told us, we are to love one another and in doing so we show that we are His.  It is not about a competition to see who can do more, do better; it is about what is in our heart that makes a difference.  God is looking for those whom He has called to step up and bring the good news to everyone.

  *  ~  ♥  ~  ✞  ~  ♥  ~  *

Father, help us to reach out to those who are hurting and lost. Remind us to pray before we act to know what You want us to do to further Your Kingdom.  Reveal Your Word to us so we can know we are hearing from You, not ourselves.  We want to do what is right.  In Jesus’ name, amen!

You Lead

psalmshymnsspiritualsongskjv

I’ve got waves that are tossin’ me
Crashin’ all over my beliefs
And in all sincerity, Lord,
I wanna be Yours

So pull me out of this mess I’m in
‘Cause I know I’m wanderin’
Lead my soul back home again
I’ve always been Yours
And this world may push, may pull
But Your love it never fails

You lead, I’ll follow; Your hands hold my tomorrow
Your grip, Your grace, You know the way
You guide me tenderly
When you lead, I’ll follow
Just light the way and I’ll go
‘Cause I know what You got for me is more than I can see
So lead me on, on, on and on
Just lead me on, on, on and on

As a child I heard Your voice
But as a girl I made my choice
There is no other way for me
I’m devoted to You
You’re my Peace on the heavy days
You’re the warmth of an autumn blaze
Your love carries me away
And it’s never too soon, no…

Sometimes when I wake up, I don’t wanna rise up
Out of my bed, too many thoughts in my head
Don’t wanna be who I used to be
Gonna take the back seat and let You lead
And I…need to stop, need to stop
‘Cause I’m going too fast
And I…know my God is still God
And you got my back

For this new year, God gave me a phrase (instead of just one word).  A phrase made up of three simple words—Let God Lead.  Seems so easy, but in reality it’s a struggle.  I am a fixer.  I can be a control freak.  I think I should be able to handle things on my own.  I feel the need to have a plan mapped out. Life just doesn’t cooperate.

I am always humbled, though, when I finally come to my senses and realize there is no need for me to blaze my own trail.  I have a perfect Guide who is never wrong, never falters, never fails, never makes a wrong turn.  As this songs reminds me “Your hands hold my tomorrow, Your grip, Your grace, You know the way….” It would be so much simpler if this dawned on me BEFORE I take matters into my own hands.

Psalm 139:10 (AMP) reminds me “Even there shall Your hand lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.” Even there.  I can never reach a place where the Lord refuses to guide me.  Even in the smallest of details, Isaiah 43:19 (NLT) tells us “I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.” He is there to lead me through whatever is going on.  Or (as Jamie Grace puts it) “and I know my God is still God…and You got my back…I know Ya got me, I know Ya got me, I know Ya got me…”.

In Proverbs 4:11(NIV) God promises that He will “instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.”  I truly desire to let God lead.  But when life throws me a curve (as it has recently) I am tempted to focus on what needs to be done and how best to do it.  I need to be reminded (as the song goes) “‘Cause I know what You got for me is more than I can see...”.

I need to remember God is in control and already has the perfect plan worked out.  Sometimes He just isn’t willing to show me the whole plan all at once and I get impatient.  I feel like I need to be doing something…anything.  I think I need to take action when the only thing I really need to be doing is praying and taking the time to listen for a response.  Jeremiah 33:3a (NASB) tells us “Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”  He promises to answer us.  Psalm 32:8(AMP) promises “I [the Lord] will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you.” So what I need to do is “…take the back seat and let you lead, and I…need to stop, need to stop, ‘cause I’m going too fast...”.

*  ~  ♥  ~  ✞  ~  ♥  ~  *

Father, I really want to let You lead.  I just get in the way sometimes. I get impatient.  Remind me that You have my back, that You are in control.  Stop me when I race ahead of Your plan.  Keep me on the right path.  In Your name I ask this – Amen, It Is So!

Almond Joy Chocolate Bark

Almond Joy Chocolate Bark

What’s Valentine’s Day without some chocolate?  This is pretty healthy stuff though, so as long as you don’t eat the whole batch in one sitting, you can have a treat and not be naughty.  Almond Joy Chocolate Bark is the way to go!

I love dark chocolate and I use the darkest I can find in the grocery store.  Here I used a bag (11.5 oz) of 63% cacao Guittard chocolate chips, but feel free to use whatever dark chocolate you like.  I also used roasted, salted almonds because that little bit of salt really offsets the sweet and makes the flavors pop.  If you want a sweeter bark, you can use “Angel Flake” coconut that has sugar added.  I used unsweetened coconut flakes and it’s quite yummy!  I also used 2 tablespoons of coconut oil.  I like that it makes the chocolate a little smoother, and I think it tastes great too.  You can leave it out if you don’t have it.

Give some to your sweeties, treat your friends at work, or just nibble on this chocolate bark and enjoy some quiet time.  Happy Valentines Day!

Almond Joy Chocolate Bark

Ingredients:

  • 1 bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips (use the darkest chocolate you can find, with the highest percent of cacao)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 cup whole, roasted, salted almonds
  • 1/3 cup shredded, unsweetened coconut

Directions:

  1. In an oven-safe bowl, microwave the chocolate and coconut oil together for 30 seconds.  Stir very well with a rubber spatula, then microwave again.  Keep doing this until your chocolate and coconut oil are smooth and blended.  Mine took 3 blasts of 30 seconds each.
  2. Line an 8×8 baking pan with plastic wrap.  Pour in 1/3 of the melted chocolate and spread over the bottom of the pan.
  3. Spread the almonds over the chocolate layer and sprinkle with coconut.
  4. Pour the rest of the chocolate over the almonds and coconut and lightly spread to cover.  Put in the freezer for about 2 hours until solid.  Cut or break into 2″ pieces.

I Keep Falling In Love

I am found in Your embrace
Covered by Your love
You’re my deepest dream I know
Your love so strong, Spirit come

You lift me up to heaven’s door
You restore my soul
I come here without Your touch
I need You so much, I need You more
You’re my Rock and my Redeemer
The Rock on which I stand

I keep falling in love with You, Lord
Every beat of my heart, breath that I take
Through the seasons that change, Your love remains
My hiding place, my home…falling in love

God is the husband to those who are not married.  He is the husband of those who are widowed.  God is the ultimate mate for us.
He knows what we want and need before we ever speak it.  Remember our words are what will happen.  If we speak positive over our lives, it will be be positive. If we speak negative, only negative will occur.  And, oh, how we struggle with our tongue.
Most of our lives we are not admonished on what we say. It is hard to break habits and begin to always speak positive words to ourselves and to those around us.  We often speak of where are are in our life.
When we allow God to be our Rock and our Redeemer, our words will change.  Even if we have been a believer we can sink back into our old ways.  We are so blessed to have a Father, Husband, Friend who loves us more than any human ever could.
*  ~  ♥  ~  ✞  ~  ♥  ~  *
Father, help us to keep our focus on You. Forgive us for taking our eyes off of You—as Peter did when walking on the water with Your son Jesus.  Help us keep on track to seeking You.  Help us to forget the wrongs we imagine or even those things that are real.  Unforgiveness keeps only us captive, not the one who wronged us.  Help us become free to truly love as You made us to.  Help us to love You more deeply while developing our trust.  In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Forgiveness is Love

SeekingHimLogoLove is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  Love never fails….

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 NIV

Wow, Paul sure gave the Church alot to live up to. We are not to hold grudges, not to gossip with others, not to lie about each other, not to  boast about ourselves.  We are to be encouragers—a light to those around us.  We are to show love to each other when we would rather be hateful or angry.

Human nature says ‘an eye for an eye,’ but God tells us we are to love at all times.  When things happen to us we are to seek His counsel first. We are to lay it down before Him and pray for discernment to know how to react or how to handle the situation.

Paul understood what God wanted. He knew God wanted our best, but in order to give our best we have to let go of stuff!  Stuff we have hung onto for years.  Stuff we have let stay in our lives for far too long.  God wants us to forgive those who have wronged us in order to receive His greatest gifts.  As we forgive, we are forgiven.  For those who are holding on to unforgiveness, hard times are experienced, sometimes illness.

When we forgive, a weight is lifted from our hearts.  We will feel light, we will feel as if the world is at our fingertips, as when we first believed in Jesus Christ.  We can have that now.  Unforgiveness weighs a ton and sometimes we don’t realize it is piling up.

We need to release those who have wronged us and forgive ourselves.  We need to let God take away everything that holds us from reaching our dreams.  Stop believing the lies Satan has told us.  God wants us to love always, and not hold on to the wrongs in this world.

*  ~  ♥  ~  ✞  ~  ♥  ~  *

Heavenly Father, help us forgive.  Help us to love You as You designed us to.  Show us ways to forgive.  Help us break away the chains that bind us to unforgiveness.  You can show us where we need to forgive and move along to become freely serve You and Your kingdom whether in our own home, in the community, or in the world.                                                             In Jesus’ name, amen.

With All My Heart

psalmshymnsspiritualsongskjv

In this quiet place with You
I bow before Your throne
I bare the deepest part of me
To You and You alone
I keep no secrets
For there is no thought
You have not known
I bring my best and all the rest
To You and lay them down

With all my heart
I want to love You, Lord
And live my life
Each day to know You more
All that is in me
Is Yours completely
I’ll serve You only
With all my heart

You faithfully supply my needs
According to Your plans
So help me, Lord, to seek Your face
Before I seek Your hand
And trust You know what ‘s best for me
When I don’t understand
Then follow in obedience
In every circumstance

The Great I AM deserves our all—all our love, all our obedience, all our worship, all our devotion, all our service, all our focus, all our praise, all our whole heart—our everything.  Actually, He requires our all. Listen to these three examples from the Scriptures where God’s people (you and me, too!) are given the command to love God with all their heart…

When Moses gave the Law to the Israelites, he said:

These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe…so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Deuteronomy 6:1-4 (excerpts)

The prophet Jeremiah was given this compelling message to send to the exiled Israelites who had been carried into captivity by Nebuchadnezzer and his army.  Think about how comforted they must have been hearing God’s words!

For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord,
thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil,
to give you hope in your final outcome.
Then you will call upon Me, and you will come and pray to Me, and I will hear and heed you.
Then you will seek Me, inquire for, and require Me [as a vital necessity]
and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.
I will be found by you, says the Lord….

Jeremiah 29:11-14

Our Lord spoke this convicting message to His followers.

And one of the scribes…asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?”
Jesus answered, “The most important is,
‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
And you shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Mark 12:28-32

We know from the Scriptures that God desires us to

  • trust Him with all of our heart (Proverbs 3:5 and 6)
  • work heartily as if for Him with all of our heart (Colossians 3:23)
  • seek Him with all our heart (Deuteronomy 4:29 and 30)
  • serve Him with our whole heart (1 Chronicles 28:9)
  • love Him with all our heart (Matthew 22:37)

Here are a few questions that I have asked myself… perhaps you have asked yourself the same things, too:

What would it take for you, {coleen},  to…

Give your all?
Be sold out for God?
Be His completely?
Serve Him only?
Love Him with all your heart?

Have you answered those questions yet?  If so, would you share your answer with us (in the comments below).

Free To Be (Holding Nothing Back)

psalmshymnsspiritualsongskjv

I am chosen
I am free
I am living for eternity
Free now forever

You picked me up, turned me around
You set my feet on solid ground
Yours now forever

And nothing’s gonna hold me back
No, nothing’s gonna hold me back
Nothing’s gonna hold me back

My chains fell off, my heart was free
I’m alive to live for You
I’m alive to live for You
Amazing love, how can it be
You give everything for me,
You give everything for me

You washed my sin and shame away
The slate is clean—a brand new day; free now forever
Now boldly I approach Your throne
To claim this crown through Christ my own
Yours now forever

I’m free to live…free to give…free to be…I’m free to love You

Are you dancing around your living room, hands raised, singing ‘Nothing’s gonna hold me back…You give everything for me-e-e-e!’ ???  You (me, too!) have much to be dancing about…so much to be praising our Lord and thanking Him for!  We are chosen…free…and living for eternity!  We are alive because of His amazing Love!  Our sin and shame has been washed away…and the slate was made clean! AND, we ARE now His FOREVER!

Only through mercy and the accomplishments of the Messiah have we been given access to God’s throne.  Amazing, isn’t it?  And to think, this had been Almighty God’s intention all along!  His loving plan for us!

This is according to the purpose of the ages,
which He made in the Messiah, Jesus our Lord,
in whom we have boldness, access, and confidence through faith in Him.
Ephesians 3:11 and 12

We are free—totally, completely, not of our own works, absolutely…by grace. We have been set free from the sin of Adam that besets all mankind; free from a life of slavery to sin; free from condemnation; free from the Law; free from judgment; free to be all that God intends us to be! We should live like it!

Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,
because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life
set me free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8:1 and 2

So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine;
and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.
So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”
John 8:31 and 32, 36

For freedom Christ has set us free;
stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1

So throw your hands up in praise and adoration of the One Who loves you so!  Sing your little heart out…hold nothing back!

I’m free to live
I’m free to give
I’m free to be
I’m free to love You
