At Home with GCH: Greek Salad

Greek Salad

We are big salad eaters at my house.  (And when I say “we”, I mean my husband and I.  My girls won’t go near the lettuce unless it’s shredded in a sandwich, and even then it’s touch and go!)  We’ll have a big salad for dinner at least once a week, sometimes more.  I’m always on the lookout for ways to eat healthier, get more veggies, and eat less refined carbohydrates.  This Greek Salad really fits the bill!

If you’ve made this salad before or had it at a restaurant, you know it’s fresh, bright and simple.  The two things that make it spark and give it that clean taste are the dressing and the cheese.  The dressing is maybe the easiest vinaigrette around—all you need are dried oregano, lemon juice, and olive oil!  Taste it, add salt, pepper and a pinch of sugar to taste, and you’re done!  The cheese is a crumbly white cheese called feta.  It tastes sort of like goat cheese, but it’s a little saltier, a little drier in texture.  It’s also very low in calories, so feel free to add a few tablespoons to your salad.

We had this salad last night, in huge bowls, with braised chicken.  If you want to make it a one-dish meal, add diced chicken or grilled shrimp right to the salad.  Healthy and delicious—it’s what’s for dinner!

Greek Salad

Ingredients:

  • 2 heads romaine lettuce
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cucumber, peeled and sliced in half, then into half-moons
  • 1/4 red onion, sliced as thin as possible
  • 1/4 cup black olives (I like Kalamata; make sure you buy pitted olives – I hate spitting out the pits!)
  • 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • salt, pepper, and a pinch of sugar
  • 1/4 cup olive oil

Directions:

  1. Make the dressing:  In a small Tupperware cup with a tight-fitting lid, mix together the oregano, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and a pinch of sugar.  Set aside – this gives the oregano time to “bloom” in the lemon juice and release it’s flavor.  If you add the oil too soon, you coat the oregano and it’s flavor won’t be as strong.
  2. Cut the lettuce into bite-sized pieces and wash well.  To compose, fill a large bowl with the lettuce, then top with bell pepper, cucumber, onion, olives, and feta.
  3. Add the oil to the oregano and lemon juice, shake well to combine, and pour over salad.

Notes:  This recipe makes 2 big salads, or  4 side salads.  Many people add tomato to a Greek Salad, and I encourage you to try it out—in the summer, when they are in season.  If you have leftover salad ingredients, this makes a great wrap—just roll it all up in a tortilla and eat like a burrito – especially great with chopped, cooked chicken!

Life’s Healing Choices – Chapter 2 Review

Realize I am not God

Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him, that He has the power to help me recover.

 _____________

“Happy are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

Matthew 5:4

In the first chapter, we admitted we were powerless.  Now in the second chapter, we come to believe God exists, that we ARE important to Him and that we are capable to receive His power to help us to recover.  All we have to do is believe and receive.  In the second chapter we find the hope in Christ alone through His promises: “He will bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.  They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor.” Isaiah 61:3

On Tuesday, Leslie talked with us about 3 amazing truths about God: That God exists; you matter to Him; and He has the power to help you. From the beginning of Creation, we have acknowledged that God exists—just take a look at the stars, the mountains, the oceans—all the magnificent artwork of a God who loves us enough to splash beauty all around us. Ok, so we believe He exists but do we really believe we matter to Him?  Leslie did a beautiful job showing us through His word and David’s psalms that yes, we matter so much that God keeps track of all my sorrows. “He has collected all my tears in His bottle and has recorded each one in His book.”Psalm 56:8

Wednesday, Kim gave us a reality check on keeping plugged into God’s power.  After all, do we really think we can run our TV’s, computers, game stations, ovens, microwaves, or coffee pots without power?  How do we then expect God to answer our prayers and pleas for help without being plugged into Him?  Knowing who He is and believing His promises: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” Isaiah 43:2

On Thursday, Amy took us through praying for God to fill us with His love, let His power wash over us and heal our hurts, habits or hang ups.  Then we began learning the importance of writing about what God is doing in your life through this study, so you can look back and are encouraged as you journey through the eight choices.  Finally, sharing with each other along the way.  “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17   We are to encourage one another through our walk. We will run into times when we do not want to deal with issues we are facing. However, through accountability and sharing throughout the study, others will encourage you to press on toward the finish.  Receive what God has in store for you.

I want to encourage you with another promise from His word:

Verse 5 goes on to say “No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life.  I will never leave you nor forsake you.”   What amazing promises of hope we have studied and learned this week.

“I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.”

— Joshua 1:3 —

Let’s Pray:

Most gracious and loving Father, we are so overwhelmed by the fact that we matter so much to You that You give us a crown of beauty. You record our tears and that You will never leave us nor forsake us.  Father, as we begin to lay down our hurts and habits, and trust You will heal our hearts, please give us the courage to change what we know we can and let You change what we cannot.  Give us wisdom and strength to finish this journey and endure while the miracles happen! We give all the glory and honor to You.  In Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen!!

Captivating: Weekly Review – Chapter 2 – What Eve Alone Can Tell

Weekly Review – Chapter 2

Monday, Jackie took us back to the beginning of Creation!  Wow, the way she described this in her blog was simply beautiful!!  All this beauty was created as a place where God’s own image would dwell.  This would be the home of Adam and Eve.  The beauty of all the trees, birds, flowers, rivers, and such; and then God added two more things:  man and woman.  Jackie reminded us that the creation of Adam was different to the way God made the world.  He said the Word and it came into being but with Adam, He formed him from the dust of the ground and then breathed life into him.  How awesome this is to know that we were created differently than everything else and that we bear the image of God.  And when God created woman…WOW!  She is so perfect.  This first WOMAN! So beautiful, with flawless skin, long hair, the eyes, when she first set them on Adam. Talk about her body, her arms and legs….  A beauty to behold!  Jackie closes her blog with this reminder:  “Dear girlfriend, you are Eve, the crown of creation.  It’s no wonder you feel the way you do, the way you long to be the beauty or the princess in your story.  I pray that you will allow the Lord to restore what has been lost so that you can take your rightful place.”  What a beautiful reminder!

Tuesday, Tonya reminded us that God is relational.  God is relational. So are we.  God has a heart for romance. So do we.  God has a desire for intimate relationships. So do we.  God longs to love us. We long to love.  God longs to be loved. We long to be loved.   It’s time that we embrace the heart God placed in each and every woman. A heart that is created in the image of God’s heart.  We were designed in His image, this is why we are so in-tune with the relationships we keep. It’s not a weakness. It is another part of our heart that is created after Gods. God’s heart. Eve’s heart. Our heart.   There is one relationship that should be held higher than any other.  She reminded us that our relationship with God should never take the back-burner!  It should always be the most important relationship we have.

Wednesday, Carissa reminded us that we can be someone’s “Ezer” with just a smile, a positive comment, a loving remark.  I have to constantly remind myself that every day!  God gives us the opportunity to be someone’s Ezer with friends, co-workers, family, and even strangers.  You never know what just a little smile can do—you may have saved someone’s life! And that’s the beauty in you! That’s you, acting in God’s image, and loving a hurting world.  To be an everyday Ezer Kenegdos…that’s our mission!  She also reminded us that We, as women, are beauty incarnate.  She closed her blog with this reminder:  You are beautiful.  You are created in the image of God.  You are essential.  You matter.

Thursday, Michelle reminded us of our beauty; that We are created in God’s image.  Think about that.  Out of ALL the things that God created, everything, it is us that He decided to create in His image.  What an amazing honor. Jeremiah 29:13 it says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” He has confidence that if you truly get to know Him, you can’t help , but fall in love with who He is and want to make that relationship grow.   She reminded us of how beautiful we are because we are created in His image.  She reminded us to treasure the beauty that God created, and ended her blog with this reminder: There is a radiance in your heart that the world desperately needs.  Shine bright, ladies!

Today, I would like to close with this.  You are a special unique creature.  God created YOU for His pleasure.  He created YOU just as you are…no more, no less.  You are beautiful.  There is no doubt about that!  He created YOU in His image!   YOU are fearfully and wonderfully made!  You are exactly who God designed you to be.  Meditate on that!  Allow God to speak to your heart through this message this week!  Allow Him to show you the beauty that He created.  Allow Him to open your eyes to see the creation that He created!  Allow Him to teach you to LOVE this creation, just as you are!

I love you!  God loves you!  And until next week, as Michelle said, “Shine Bright!”

GCH:decaf – Circle of Friends

Circle-of-Friends

There is a semi-old song that I think about when I think of the girls I have met through this GCH:Decaf ministry.  I have been singing it a lot lately.  If you have never listened to the girl group you should really look them up.  They have some awesome harmonies and the words to their songs are really relevant.  Chances are you have heard their songs and just didn’t know who sings them.  Anyway, the song I have had on my heart is “Circle of Friends”.  Here is the first part:

We were made to love and be loved

But the price this world demands will cost you far too much

I spent so many years just trying to fit in

Now I’ve found a place in this circle of friends

In a circle of friends we have one Father

In a circle of friends we share this prayer

That every orphaned soul will know

And all will enter in

To the shelter of this circle of friends

That is how I feel about all of the new friends I have met through the study of “A Daughter’s Worth” by Ava Sturgeon.  We began the study as just a group of random hearts from all over the United States mostly, then, we had friends join us in other countries.  People began reading our study blogs in over 100 countries around the world.  The leaders and the girls in the groups became friends and we got to know each other through our Facebook groups.  This study, this group of leaders, this group of girls has changed my life and I want to say Thank You to each one.  I’m sure there will be more lives touched through the words spoken through the blogs than we will ever know.  I pray that God multiplies the hearts blessed by the words He inspired us to write and publish.  The next verse of the song:

If you weep, I will weep with you

If you sing for joy the rest of us will lift our voices too

But no matter what you feel inside there’s no need to pretend

That’s the way it is in this circle of friends

Many of you have shared your hearts and hurts with us during this study.  We have grown close and that makes this Mama’s heart so happy.  We have loved to cry with you and sing with you and celebrate with you.  We are your FRIENDS and you are ours.  As we began making plans for the next study we looked at many things that might make a difference in the lives of teen girls and young women.  We began talking about doing the study “not a fan” by Kyle Idleman.  As we continued to pray and make decisions, it was becoming apparent that we needed to take a step back for a time.  We have decided to not go forward with a new Bible study for teens with Girlfriends Coffee Hour Ministry right now.  There are many exciting things happening at GCH.  I believe God will continue to bless the women as they minister to other women all over the world in the areas they have chosen to pour their hearts into.

Among the nations, tribes and tongues we have sisters and brothers

And when we meet in heaven we will recognize each other

With joy so deep and love so sweet

                Oh we’ll celebrate these friends

And a life that never ends

                In a Prayer

That will not be long before

                All will enter in

To the shelter of this circle of friends

Because we have all become social media friends, we can contact each other whenever we want to.  Please know that your leaders love you all very much and would love the chance to keep in touch and be a part of your life as you mature.  Remember us if you ever need someone to pray for you, we would love that.  If you have questions about anything, please message us and we will be there for you.

In a CIRCLE of FRIENDS we have one FATHER,

In a CIRCLE of FRIENDS we share this prayer,

That every orphaned soul will know and ALL will enter in,

To the shelter of this CIRCLE of FRIENDS.

May our Father God bless and keep each of you until we meet again.  If you want to reach me you can find me at Teresa@girlfriendscoffeehour.com or leave me a comment here.  I’d love to hear from you.

At Home with GCH: Meal Planning Week 3

Shopping Tips & Coupons

One of the first things I do when it comes to Menu Planning is check my local grocery ads.  I have two grocery stores here in my hometown, and two Walmart stores within 15 miles of where I live.  I also have two other grocery stores I shop that are about 30 miles from where I live.  Which store I shop at depends on which store has the best deals.

At first, when I started shopping this way, I thought it was nuts to drive 30 miles out of the way to buy just a few items on sale.  But let me say this first.  I don’t drive out of my way unless it is a REALLY good sale!  Why do I do it this way?  One reason is because I am married to a penny-pincher husband.  I say that with much love!! 🙂 He will shop for weeks on end before he will purchase something.  He has turned me into a penny-pincher, too!  But, I also recognize that my time is valuable, too!  So if I’m only going to save 15-cents on one item, I refuse to drive 30 miles out of my way to save just 15-cents!  To do that, makes no sense at all.  So it has to be one really good sale before I will drive out of my way.

When I grocery shop, I will always shop the outer edge of the grocery store first.  That is where you will find the best foods for you and your family; vegetables, fruits, grains, and etc.  The inside aisles of the grocery stores are more for canned goods, and processed foods.

I have learned over the years that most times it makes more sense to cook from scratch.  It is definitely healthier for you and your family.  Processed foods were created to help you save time in the kitchen, yes.  But, when you really truly look at it, processed foods are not good for you, if you truly knew what was being used in those foods!  So, another tip I can give you is to cook from scratch when possible!  Make the time to cook this way, to offer healthier meals for your family.  Most times, cooking from scratch doesn’t take any longer than cooking from a box of processed food!  You will love it because you know you are taking good care of your family!

Another tip when grocery shopping is to look at the price per unit.  You will be amazed at how much money you can save if you compare unit prices!!  This is something I learned from my husband.  I used to be the one that would go in the grocery store, and just grab and run.  I was always in a hurry!  I just wanted to get in and out of the store, get home, get it cooked, and get it on the table.  I was not price-conscious in any way!  But, after I learned how to do this, and began to see just how much money I was saving by doing this, I don’t shop any other way now!

The next tip I will share is the benefit of using coupons.  Coupons can save you tons of money, and you don’t have to be a Coupon Queen to make that happen!

I am the first to admit that I am not a Coupon Queen.  I find them time consuming, and I always seem to forget them when I head to the store!  BUT, what I mean by this statement is that I am not a Coupon Queen like you see on the reality shows!  I just do not have the time to put into couponing like these ladies do.  But, I DO use coupons.

When I clip coupons, I only clip ones that I know I will use.  I don’t stockpile grocery items in my garage or in closets in my home!  I use the coupons for food, or items that I know I will use within the next couple of weeks.

There is a lot to learn about using coupons.  Much of it can be found on the Internet if you do a search for Coupon 101.

Here are some tips that I have learned along the way:

  • Where do I find coupons?
    • Magazines
    • Newspapers
    • Internet
    • Coupons Groups on Facebook
    • Friends/Family
    • Direct from Manufacturer
    • Weekly Grocery Store ads
    • Tear pads located in the stores
    • Peel-off’s located on the product
    • Free Samples from manufacturer
  • Keeping your coupons organized
    • 3-ring binder with baseball card holders (Wal-mart, etc)
    • Coupon caddy (Dollar store)
    • Some women use what is called a Couponizer (www.couponizer.com)
  •  Categories to include in your Coupon-holder
  • Baby
  • Bakery (I put all breads, rolls, etc here)
  • Baking
  • Canned/Boxed Items
  • Beverages
  • Condiments
  • Meat/Produce
  • Dairy /Refrigerated
  • Frozen
  • Household (things such as batteries, light bulbs, etc)
  • Laundry / Cleaning Products / Dishwashing
  • Medicine
  • Paper/Plastic (includes disposable dinnerware to toilet tissue)
  • Hair Care
  • Oral Care
  • Soap/Body Wash
  • Personal Care (Shampoo, Deodorant, Beauty, Feminine Care)
  • Snacks
  • Retail Outlets
  • How to Use Your Coupons: (Again, there is so much to learn about coupons.  I am just going to cover the basics here, today.)
    • One Per Rule – Means the coupon can be used by one customer only.  You are a customer; your husband is a customer; your daughter is a customer.  J  So remember, if you need more than one of an item, ring it up as individual customers!
    • Per Transaction:  Means the coupon can only be used for that transaction, for that shopping trip.  You are restricted by the number of times you can use that particular coupon in that shopping trip.
    • BOGO:  Buy One – Get One FREE.  Buy one item at regular cost get a second item of the same price, free.  Most manufacturers will put a limit on how many items can be purchased.
    • Expiration Dates:  You must redeem coupons by midnight by a certain date before it is no longer valid.

Next, I want to take you through the steps of using a Shopping List.

A shopping list is a must if you want to save money with Meal Planning!  There is no way around this!  A list is your lifesaver when shopping.  Never leave home without it!

How many times have you gone to the grocery store to buy a gallon of milk, only to come home with over $100 in groceries?!?!  It used to happen to me all the time!  Why?  Because I didn’t plan ahead!  My lack of planning cost me extra money every time I go to the store without a list!  So the BEST advice I can give you is to never ever shop without a list and to STICK TO YOUR LIST!

As we learned last week, we must first plan out our meals; checking food pantry and freezer to see what you have on hand first.  This is a definite must before going grocery shopping.  I used to always go to the grocery store, without my list, and pick up things that I just knew I was out of, only to find that I had that exact item on hand once I arrived home!  Grrrr!!  More money that I did not need to spend on that trip!

God calls us to be good stewards of what He has provided for us, and each time we shop without planning ahead, we are disobeying God’s command to be good stewards of His provisions.

So here is my first rule:  ALWAYS SHOP WITH A LIST & STICK TO THE LIST!

First check your pantry and freezer.  Next plan your meals for the month, and then break it down to a weekly menu.  Then decide what groceries you need to prepare the meals on your Menu Planner for that week.  What you don’t have on hand is what will go on your list.

I have some favorite grocery lists that I have found on the Internet.  I would like to share those links with you, so you can choose which one works best for you.  These sites offer FREE printables.  Remember, just a simple piece of notebook paper will work, too!

This will give you a good start.  You can find more by doing an Internet search.

I will conclude this week’s blog here.  Just remember …. TIME IS MONEYMake time to save moneyPlan ahead to save moneyUse coupons to save money!  Never shop without a list!

Next week, we will talk about food preparation.  I will share some tips for preparing your meals ahead of time to save time, and money!  I hope you are enjoying this series, so far!  If you have questions, please feel free to post them below.  I will be happy to answer them myself, or find the answer for you!

Until next week,

Christi

Life’s Healing Choices: HOPE, Make the Choice

Choice 2: Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him, and that He has the power to help me recover.  It is in this step that we find our HOPE.  The changes you desire are only steps away.  But, as many of you have shared over the past week, the steps are not always easy ones.

I struggle with control.  There I said it!  I don’t like many roller coasters because of the feeling of being so out-of-control.  Same goes for motorcycles!  I want my kids to behave a certain way, my husband to respond to me in a certain way, my workday to follow a set pattern, etc.  One huge reason I’ve never taken the path of drug or alcohol use is the buzz or high that others crave makes me anxious because I’m not in control of things.  Sometimes being in control is a good thing; but when you try to make sure that every part of your world lines up “just so” … it only brings disruption, anxiety, and depression.

We have hope and promise in the Scriptures that we are not on this journey alone. “I am sure that God, who began the good work within you, will keep right on helping you grow in His grace until His task within you is finally finished on that day when Jesus Christ returns.” (Philippians 1:6)

Blessings,

Amy

PRAY –

Dear Lord, my life is a precious treasure from You.  I experience things as a result of my choices, both good and bad.  Help me not ignore the pain that comes from my choices, as it is there to turn me back to You.  I admit that I’ve refused Your help.  I pray for Your power to be real and evident.  I know that it is only through You that I will have the strength and power to break the habits that are holding me back from experiencing fully the life You have given to me.  I want to experience true love and solid relationships, learning how to trust and respect others and myself.  I want to experience self-control to walk away from temptation, and my tendency to turn back to comfortable patterns that continue to hold me back.  Help me to continue making healing choices.  Amen.

WRITE –

God promises to always be with you.  He will never leave you.  He will never forsake you.  He will never turn His back on you.  Do you believe this to be true? Deep down in your heart of hearts, do you really believe this to be true?

If you’ve been hurt and disappointed by other people, it’s hard to believe that someone as great, loving and powerful as God would stand by you…no matter what!  No sin is too great to turn Him from His children.  We may feel too ugly, too damaged, too tarnished, too sinful for God, and we make the choice to turn away.  But that’s OUR choice, not God’s.

“When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you.  When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown!  When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you”  Isaiah 43:2.

Using prompts from our book, take time to write in your journal the questions and answers that speak to you most.  I would encourage you to answer all of the questions in the book – don’t skip the hard ones, dear friends.

SHARE –

Sharing can be the most frightening step.  How will the other person react to our story?  Will they judge or condemn my thoughts and/or actions?  Can I trust them to protect my information? Whatever your apprehensions, remember in Proverbs we’re told, “As iron sharpens iron, so people can improve each other.” (Prov 27:17)

Baker gives a very clear and comforting instruction, “This journey is not one to be traveled alone.  You need someone of the same sex, a trusted friend with whom you can share what God is doing in your life.” (p. 54).  Do you have someone in your life you can talk to about this journey?

After you have taken the time to reflect and write your answers to these questions, we welcome your comments below, or visit our Facebook Group for additional discussion. Please remember that all comments shared on this page are open to the public.  You do have the option of signing anonymously to post your comment.

Power Verses:
“Remember that in the past you were without Christ.  You were not citizens of Israel, and you had no part in the agreements with the promise that God made to His people. You had no hope, and you did not know God.  But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away from God are brought near through the blood of Christ’s death.”  Ephesians 2:12–13

“But this precious treasure –this light and power that now shine within us –is held in a perishable container, that is, in our weak bodies.  Everyone can see that the glorious power within must be from God and is not our won.  We are pressed on every side by troubles, but not crushed and broken.  We are perplexed because we don’t know why things happen as they do, but we don’t’ give up and quit.”  2 Corinthians 4:7-8

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think.  Then you will learn from your own experience how His ways will really satisfy you.”  Romans 12:2

“And this is the secret: that Christ in your hearts is your only hope of glory.”  Colossians 1:27

Lord, I have tried to fix & control my life’s hurts by myself.  Often, I make situations worse by refusing to let go and let You handle a situation.  I admit I am powerless, and change will only come when I turn it all over to You.  You loved me enough to send Your Son to die on the cross for my sins.  Thank You for standing by me, believing in me, and wanting more for my life.  Help me to continue making healthy, healing choices in my life, and to loosen my grip on things that need to be in Your hands.  Amen.

GCH:decaf – A Special Prayer

GCH_decaf

I wanted to take a moment today to say how thrilled I have been to meet some of the GCH:decaf girls that have been introduced this month, here on our blog!  God is doing some amazing things in the lives of these awesome women!

I pray over all of the girls in GCH:decaf, each day, and ask the Lord to bless them.  I also pray that He will guide them, and give them wisdom.  That He will protect them from the schemes of the enemy.  That He will keep them from temptation.  These young lives are so very important to Him, and to us.

We’ve been introduced to some amazing young women over these last couple of weeks, and I just want to reach out today and pray over each one of them.

Robin with her Soccer career.  Mary Ruth and her education.  Carlia and Trinicia and the love they have for each other as sisters.  Channa and her desire to make a difference in the lives of others.  Michaela and her continued walk with the Lord.  Diamond and her desire to hear God’s voice.  Amber and her continued relationship with Christ.  Zinni and her move to the USA soon!  Rebekkah and the continued wisdom God is giving her about dating.  Tristan and the ability to just be herself.  Miss Vicky and the amazing family God has given her!

_________

Lord, I lift up each one of these young ladies and I ask that You guide them, and direct their paths.  Protect them Lord, from the worldly temptations that could lead them astray.  Give them wisdom Lord, when dealing with life issues, and continue to keep them strong in their walk with You.  I ask Lord that You protect these girls, and lead them in the direction You want them to go.  Your Words in Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that You have plans for them, to give them hope and a future.  I pray for these plans to come to fruition in their lives, Lord.  Lord, Your way is perfect, and I pray that You will keep these girls on the path that You have designed for them.

I pray Lord that You will give them strength to deny temptations of this world.  Help them to be strong when faced with peer pressure.  Help them to say no to things that You do not want for them, Lord.  Help them to recognize Satan’s tricks before it’s too late.

Give them peace and comfort when they need it, Lord.  Give them endurance and persistence, and help them remember Lord that they can do all things through YOU who strengthens them.

Lord, we love these girls so very much, and we pray for nothing more than Your perfect will to be done in their lives.  In Your precious Name, AMEN.

Girls, may God bless you and keep you; make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you.  May He lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.  We love you!  Thank you for sharing your lives with us!

Blessings,

Christi Wilson, Founder of Girlfriends Coffee Hour

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Proverbs 9:9 Give [instruction] to a wise [man], and he will be yet wiser: teach a just [man], and he will increase in learning.

Isaiah 43:4a Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee.

1 Peter 4:14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.

John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for [the LORD sees] not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.

1 Timothy 4:8 For bodily exercise profits little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

Psalm 139:14-16 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully [and] wonderfully made: marvellous [are] thy works; and [that] my soul knows right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, [and] curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all [my members] were written, [which] in continuance were fashioned, when [as yet there was] none of them.

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

1 John 2:15-16 Love not the world, neither the things [that are] in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that [is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Crazy Love: Week 2 / Chapter 2 – “You Might Not Finish This Chapter” (Brooke’s Story)

“You see, I’ll be one of those people who live to be history makers at a young age.”

— Brooke Bronkowski —

___________________________

I will be honest with you. When I read through this section of the chapter, at first I felt a sense of hopelessness. How does someone so young inspire so many? How does someone so young preach the gospel to her peers, hand out Bibles, and share the love of Christ without fear? And, how does someone so young, who could have done so much more, die at such a young age?

At her funeral service, at least 200 students came forward and accepted Christ. 200 students. God used the life of a willing servant, who happened to be just 14 years old, to transform hundreds of lives while she was alive as well as through her passing.

What am I doing to have an impact? What could I ever do that would have that great of an impact? If I take a good, long, hard look in the mirror, can I truly say that I am a willing servant?

(Stay with me here. . . I know we are digging through a lot of deep stuff in this study!)

God has divinely placed each and every one of us where He wants us to be. You are uniquely female for a reason. You are in your family unit, married to a certain person (or single), raising particular children, all for a purpose. You are in your job not by chance, but because God willed you to be there. If we believe that the Lord is ruler of all; that He orchestrates all things and directs our every step, then we know the following to be true—our daily interactions with store clerks, salespeople, neighbors, and family are placed in our path for a reason. Not one thing is by chance. Every moment of our lives comes from above.

I am sure that each of us has experienced a divine appointment with someone in this world. It could have been a stranger (did someone pay your toll? hold the door? smile at you for no reason?) or someone who we know well (a spiritual mentor, a family member, or friend). God places people in our lives at certain times to serve a need that we have. He shows His love and faithfulness to us in this way.

On the flip-side…have you ever thought about God divinely using you in someone else’s life to help them meet a need that the Lord knows that they have? It could be as simple as a friendly smile or holding a door. It could be more-–buying coffee or lunch for the person in the drive-thru behind you or starting a conversation. Are you actively looking for these moments? Do you go through your day seeking God and waiting for Him to speak to your heart?

The differences we make in this life do not have to be extravagant. We are all wired differently to serve a specific purpose for our Lord. Just because you do not hand out Bibles or share the gospel with everyone you meet does not mean you are not of worth or of value to God. We are difference-makers by actively seeking our Lord, listening to what He says, and looking for opportunities to do His Will in this earthly world. God wants a willing servant. When He has your heart, He will direct your steps. And all of our steps are different.

So, although at first I felt a sense of hopelessness and condemnation reading the author’s words in this section, because that is what Satan wanted me to feel…now I know that God is using me in the way He knows He can. He used Brooke in the way He knew would work in HER life, based on her divinely created personality and attributes. And He will use YOU, too…as long as you listen and let Him. Brooke’s story is amazing…but so is yours.  Amen?

LET’S PRAY:

Father, as we reflect on the life of young Brooke, let us not lose heart for what we are not doing; yet, let us look forward to what we can still do while we are here. Help us to lay the past down and to forgive ourselves for any missed opportunities. Continue to work in and through us as we go about our daily lives, showing us who we can serve and how we can serve them. Let us become willing servants for You, oh Lord. In Jesus name, we pray–Amen!

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

Leave a comment and answer this question: How can we live differently knowing that the next interaction we have with someone, even a stranger, is one that is divinely orchestrated by the Lord?

Would you like to read a bit more about Brooke? I found a link to this news article discussing her accident where her friends talked about her deep faith. An incredible young girl.

Captivating: Why a Beauty to Unveil

“It is the glory of God to conceal a matter,

to search out a matter is the glory of kings.”

Proverbs 25:2

____________________

We are created in God’s image.  Think about that.  Out of ALL the things that God created, everything, it is us that He decided to create in His image.  What an amazing honor.  As I was reading this passage I was so thankful and in awe of our God.  When we take time to truly contemplate all He is and all He does, it should bring us to our knees.  It’s amazing.

Now because we were created in God’s image, we can start to look at parallels in that relationship.  In Proverbs we read, “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, to search out a matter is the glory of kings.”   This is how He reveals Himself, and it is how He wants us, as women, to approach our lives also.  Does God go out and force Himself on anyone who will listen?  Absolutely not.  He wants us to know Him, and then grow more and more in love with Him each day.  In Jeremiah 29:13 it says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” He has confidence that if you truly get to know Him, you can’t help but fall in love with who He is and want to make that relationship grow.

This was a big “wow” moment for me as I was reading.  The way that God woos each and every one of us is the same way we should go about any potential relationship we may be considering.   He created us to be a mystery, a beauty to unveil, and we should take that to heart.  How do you behave when you are interested in someone?  Do you throw yourself at them?  Do you make it easy for them?  Do you give too much too soon?  I know there have been times in the past when I have done all of those things.  It has never led to anything good, let alone godly.  We need to use the example of our Lord.  Intimacy requires time; it requires a slow unveiling of the beautiful mystery you are.  I loved this quote, “Whatever else it means to be feminine, it is depth and mystery and complexity, with beauty at its very essence.  Every single woman reading this right now has a beauty to unveil.  Every one.  You are created in the image of God.  What is more beautiful than that?

As we have read through this chapter on Eve, think about the amazing truths we have heard.  Why is it that we long for romance, we long for an “Ezer” and believe beauty is essential to life?  Because God wants these things too!  He created our uniquely feminine heart.  It is a beautiful thing.  We long because He longs.   This continues to blow me away!  As we finish up this chapter I ask each of you to not only remember this, but believe it:    There is a radiance in your heart that the world desperately needs.  Shine bright, ladies!

LET’S PRAY

Lord, we are so grateful to You for the way You love us.  Thank You for creating the beauty and mystery within us.  Please help us to keep that sacred.  We want to live out a life that honors the beauty You have given us.  Remind us to take it slow, and help us remember we are worth getting to know. We want to shine Your light through our depth, mystery and complexity.  In Your Holy Name we pray. Amen.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

When you read the account of the Creation, you saw Eve, a woman, as the crown of creation and the final work of God. How did that make you feel? What did you think about that?
