At Home With GCH: Cinnamon Bun Cake

I don’t know about you, but I love the smell of cinnamon ANYTHING wafting through my house! So when I found a recipe for a cinnamon roll cake, I knew I had to take it and make it my own!  I hope you enjoy this recipe for Cinnamon Bun Cake as much as my family and I did!

Cinnamon Bun Cake

Cake:

3 cups flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup sugar

4 teaspoon baking powder

1.5 cups milk

2 eggs

2 teaspoon vanilla

.5 cup butter (1 stick), melted

Topping:

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened

1 cup brown sugar

3 tablespoons flour

1 tablespoons cinnamon

Glaze:

2 cups powdered sugar

5 tablespoons milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9×13 baking pan with cooking spray, or grease and flour it. Set aside.

For Cake: In your mixer, add the flour, salt, sugar, baking powder, milk, eggs, and vanilla. When it is combined completely, slowly stir in the melted butter. Pour into the prepared pan.

For Topping: In a large bowl mix the butter, brown sugar, flour and cinnamon together until well combined and creamy. Drop spoonfuls over the batter and use a knife to marble/swirl through the cake.

Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes or when a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.

FOR GLAZE: In a small bowl, mix the powdered sugar, milk and vanilla together with a whisk. Drizzle evenly over the cake. The glaze can be drizzled when the cake is warm or cooled.  I prefer it when it is cool, but it will work either way.  Serve warm or at room temperature.

Captivating: Chapter 7 Reading Assignments – “Romanced”

Ah…romance!  The sound of that word can cause different reactions in different women depending on where you are in your journey.  That is completely normal but deep down inside I think we all long to be romanced.  Let all your preconceived notions go as we hear about what it means to be romanced by our One True God.  Here are the reading assignments for the week:

Monday: Jackie – Romanced – Longing for Romance

Tuesday: Tonya – God as Lover – Opening Our Hearts to the Romancer

Wednesday: Carissa – What Does God Want From You – Adoring Hearts

Thursday: Michelle – Cultivating Intimacy

Friday: Edwina – Weekly Review

LET’S PRAY:

Dear Lord, I come to You today, heart in hand.  I ask You to reach out to each and every woman reading this.  Comfort them, love them, romance them as only You can do.  I pray that through reading this chapter we will trust in that love completely and live in the knowledge that You are the love we most need.  In Your Holy Name I pray, Amen.

Captivating: Chapter 6 – Let Him Father You – A Deeper Healing (Pg. 106 – 112)

Daddies.  I have come to find that this can be a tough topic for many women.  Some have had wonderful doting fathers that made them feel like princesses.  More often than not our dads have fallen short in some way, and sometimes not intentionally.  Some work to provide and give their family as much as possible, but leave us emotionally void, never saying “I love you” or knowing we are cherished.  Some say all the right things, but their actions do not show love or respect for their family.  And unfortunately there are fathers that take advantage of their position in the family and violate their daughters in ways that no girl should have to experience.  What is wonderful though is that no matter what your experience with your dad, you have a Heavenly Father that loves you and cares about you more than any human father can, no matter how amazing they are!

I, like Stasi, have heard many times that we view God through the lenses we view our own fathers.  I can definitely see the validity in that, and I have seen women who definitely do that, but I don’t know if that is necessarily true for everyone.  For me, my dad was one of those dads that worked very hard to provide for our family.  I also knew that he was always in my corner.  But he was not someone who made me feel cherished, or like his little princess.  “I love you” was rarely verbalized in our house, and there was no “twirling around” in dresses or cuddling up in his lap that I can ever remember.  Despite that, I put my daddy on a pedestal and thought he could do no wrong.

To this day, I have very similar feelings.  But my view of God was just the opposite.  I thought of him as the “punishing God” just waiting for me to mess up.  Someone to be afraid of, and who would never “be in my corner” or provide for me.  So I viewed my Heavenly Father much differently than how I viewed my earthly father.  I think it was more about the faith I was raised in, rather than my dad.  I don’t think I ever heard God referred to as a father, except in prayers I was given to memorize, and even then it just seemed like words and not an actual relationship.

But praise Him that I know the truth now.  I know who He is.  He is my Daddy, my Papa, my ABBA Father.  I can snuggle up in His lap whenever I want, and He welcomes it.  I can talk to Him about anything and everything and He listens like I am the only person in the world.  I can ask Him, “Do you love me?  Am I beautiful and captivating?” and His answer will always be yes.  Isn’t that amazing?  What a loving God we serve. Do you believe this for yourself?  Are you still working to earn His love?  Rest easy sisters, there is nothing you can do to make Him love you any more or any less than He does right this minute.

A line in this chapter really stood out to me, “What if you have a genuine and captivating beauty that is marred only by your striving”.  Wow.  That stung a bit, and I definitely saw myself in that comment.  I know God loves me, right now, where I’m at, human and stumbling.  He does, and He loves you too.  So why do I still try to earn His love in so many ways?  I tend to try too hard in all relationships, tend to overthink every issue I face, put too much energy into pretending that everything is fine, try to do more and more for God through ministry or studies or any other number of things.  I am striving.  And I am holding myself back.  I am learning that is isn’t about “doing for” God, it is about “being with” God.  I take comfort in that.  I need to sit in His lap more and listen.  I need to embrace His love.  I need my Daddy.  How about you?

LET’S PRAY

Lord we come humbly to You today.  Father, we need Your love.  Come to the core of our hearts, come and bring Your love for us.  Help us to know You for who You really are, and perhaps not as we see our earthly fathers.  Reveal yourself to us.  Reveal Your love for us.  Show us what we mean to You.  Come and father us, we need You Daddy.  In Your Heavenly Name we pray.  Amen.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

Part of the reason women are so tired is because we are spending so much energy “striving”.  So much energy devoted to suppressing issues and keeping a good appearance.  We want to give you permission to relax. Rest in the security of the Lord’s love.  Let it go sweet sister! How does the thought of giving up all that struggling make you feel?

Captivating: Chapter 6 – “Healing the Wound”

Captivating_Ch6

I hope studying about the enemy’s ploys last week gave you another way of looking at your struggles and reminded you to keep putting on your armor .  Most importantly I hope it reminded you that there is always hope in Jesus!  I know that my thinking was challenged.  This week we start to work on healing our wounds.  I am looking forward to this more than you know.  Here are our reading assignments for the week:

Monday: Tonya – Healing the Wound – Hemmed In

Tuesday: Tonya – Turning From the Ways You Sought to Save Yourself – We Find Our Tears

Wednesday: Carissa – Forgive – Ask Him to Destroy Your Enemies

Thursday: Michelle –  Let Him Father You – A Deeper Healing

Friday: Edwina– Weekly Review

Saturday: Diane – Love Letters from God

LET’S PRAY

Father, we stand in expectation for what You have for us as we begin week 6. If we are struggling, help us to let our fears go.  We know that the enemy is trying to steal our joy.  We strive to live completely in You and for You.  Show us the lessons we can learn, and grow us in ways we can’t even imagine.  In Your Name, we pray.  Amen.

Captivating: Chapter 5 – There is Hope (pgs 89-91)

We have heard a lot this week about the hatred for us as women, and how hard the enemy is trying to get to us.  This is very important, something we need to be aware of so that we can be prepared when under attack.  But what I want to leave you with as we finish this chapter is that all is not lost.  There is hope When we put our faith in Jesus, there is always hope.

I love what the book of Romans has to day about hope:

Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:2-5

Amen my sisters.  HOPE DOES NOT PUT US TO SHAME.  Do not let the trials we face cause you to cave.  Let it bring you to your knees, to the feet of our Great Redeemer.  In Him we receive our hope.  You are passionately loved by the God of the universe. And my wish for you is that, May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. (Romans 15:13)

LET’S PRAY

Dear Father, I have a special prayer today for every woman You have brought here. Some women have been wounded by the special hatred the enemy has for her. I pray that each one will see the enemies lies for what they are. Lord, reveal to them the awesome beauty, strength, love and power that You have blessed them with. Have them feel the truth and hope You have to offer.  In Your Heavenly Name I pray.  Amen.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

The authors of this book stated, “You really won’t understand your life as a woman until you understand this: You are passionately loved by the God of the Universe.  You are passionately hated by His Enemy.”

With that in mind, we also need to remember:  As the daughter of the most High King, we have been given all power over the Enemy!  We have been chosen the Most High King, sought out, pre-destined, from the beginning of time.  Jesus came so that we could be healed from our brokenness!  It’s time to run to Him!

Are you beginning to believe it?

Happy Sunday, Ladies!

This week we will be reading and sharing on Chapter 5: A Special Hatred. We will be looking at the way the enemy fights so hard against women. Captivating: Chapter 4 – Wounded Femininity – Unholy Alliance

Shame

Shame is a powerful word.  To me, it is one of those words that means so much more than the definition reveals.  According to dictionary.com, shame is “The painful feeling arising from the consciousness of something dishonorable, improper, ridiculous, etc., done by oneself or another.”  The painful feeling; yes, pain being the key word.  Many of us have had something unpleasant happen to us in our lives.  Something that makes us feel “less than”—less than what my family needs…less than what the boy is asking for…less than what God wants from me.  It is what we do with those feelings that define our outlook.

When we turn those feelings of “less than” into BELIEFS that we actually are less than, then shame is bornGod doesn’t want us to live in shame.  Shame makes us hide, makes us think that we are not worthy.  Not worthy of meaningful friendships, not worthy of voicing our opinions, not worthy of love.  We are not even comfortable in our own skin.  We are so worried we will get hurt again; we just pack ourselves away and play it safe.  This is a very lonely place to be.  As daughters of The King, we need to fight these thoughts that do not speak truth into our hearts.

Created for MoreAs Romans 10:11 tells us “As scripture says, ‘Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.’”  This is the life He has for us if only we believe.  Some of us may have trust issues, even with God, but now is the time to change that.  Start praying today, right now, and ask God for forgiveness for putting your trust in yourself rather than in Him and then ask for His help.  He wants you to be free of any feelings of inadequacy.  You were created for more.  You are His creation.  No matter what you have done, no matter what pain you have endured, no matter where your thoughts have taken you, once you confess your sins He sees you as pure as snow.

As we read in Isaiah 1:18, Come now, let us settle the matter, says the Lord. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson they shall be like wool.  Let it go, my sisters!  Free yourself to live completely in the life the Lord intended for you.  This is my prayer for you.

LET’S PRAY

ABBA Father, thank You that You love us no matter what. Please forgive all our sins and, Father, please help us to forgive ourselves and overcome all the unnecessary feelings of guilt and shame.  Thank You for hearing and answering our prayers. In Your Holy Name we pray, Amen.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

Our wounds often cause us to feel shame and hide ourselves. Do you ever feel this? In what ways are you aware that you are hiding these days?

At Home with GCH: Brownies

photo-15

Ah brownies!  When I was baking for a local deli in my area, brownies were without a doubt one of the most popular items I sold.  Until relatively recently, if I wanted to make brownies, I just went to the box mix.  It was easy and they had so many different varieties.  Well, if this sounds like you, I challenge you to take the plunge into making your brownies from scratch.  You won’t believe the difference until you do it for yourself!  It is still easy, and the possibilities are endless.

Today I am going to share my basic brownie recipe with you, and one of the variations I have come up with.  Remember, you can be as creative as you wish!

Basic Brownie Recipe:

½# (2 sticks) butter (I use salted)

4 ounces unsweetened chocolate

2 large eggs

1+½ cup sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract, pure is best

1 cup all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon kosher salt

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350F.  Spray an 11 x 7 brownie pan (did you know they made actual brownie pans?  I didn’t!) with cooking spray, or butter and flour it if you prefer.

2. Using the microwave, melt the butter and chocolate.  Start with one minute, and then stir.  If it needs to melt more, heat using 30-second intervals, stirring between until the mixture is smooth.  Let stand. (You may also use a double boiler if you prefer.)

3. In the bowl of your mixer beat together the eggs, sugar, and vanilla on medium speed for about 2 minutes.  Reduce speed to low and add in the butter/chocolate mixture until combined.

4. In a separate bowl, combine the flour and salt.

5. Add the flour mixture to the chocolate mixture on low speed until just combined.  Do not overmix.   Scrape down the sides and mix a few times with a spatula by hand.

6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.  Bake for 30 minutes on the center rack of the oven.  Cool completely in pan, then cut and enjoy.  From this size pan I usually get 8 nice sized brownies.

Variation:

Marshmallow Brownies:  Use the recipe above.  After pouring the batter into the pan, take approximately 1 cup of marshmallow fluff and spoon 6 dollops evenly onto the batter.  Run a knife in a back and forth motion to create a marbled look.  Bake as normal.  NOTE: If the fluff is too sticky, place it in the microwave for 30 seconds, it will be easier to work with.

Tell me your favorite brownie add-ins! Some of mine are:

Caramel

M & M’s

Mini Marshmallows

Walnuts

Mint chocolate chips

I would love to hear if you try this recipe out, and what creations you come up with!

Captivating: Chapter 3 – (Pgs 56-59) Indulging – Eve’s Lingering Fear

Ladies, have you ever had that feeling that something was just “meant to be” or you just know that there is a reason God orchestrated something to happen?  Well, that is how I felt as I read the section of the book I am blogging on today.  If I wasn’t made to talk about this subject, I don’t know who was!

Yesterday Carissa talked about hiding our true selves.  The problem with hiding is that is doesn’t make the problem go away, it doesn’t ease the ache.  It just isolates you and, more often than not, causes you to turn to other methods to ease the pain.  We call them indulgences.  I love what the Bible calls them in Jeremiah 2:13—our “broken cisterns.”  These cisterns are different for every person.  What is yours?  Where do you tend to turn when things get tough?  When your emotions get too much to handle?  Food?  Shopping?  Alcohol?  Internet?  Television? Drugs?  The list could go on and on.

Yes, all of these things make can us feel better.  The problem is that it is a temporary fulfillment.  After a few minutes…a day…a week…the pleasure goes away and that ache is still there.  That is because we are created to be fulfilled by only one thing—the love of God.  Until you start turning to God to fill the empty places, you will never find true peace.  You may not think what you do is a big deal, that it’s harmless.  So I had a piece of cake; so my credit card bill just got a little higher; so I spent a night zoned out in front of the tv;  so what’s the big deal?  In my quiet time with the Lord this morning, I read this in my Bible and I immediately thought how perfect it is for today’s blog: It’s easy to slip into a quiet rebellion – going about your life in your own way.  But the time comes when you have to choose who or what will control you.  The choice is yours.  Will it be God, oryour own limited personality, or another imperfect substitute?

I speak from experience.  For many years I turned to food as my “broken cistern.”  It was my medication, it was my comfort, it was my love.  I was a compulsive overeater AND a bulimic.  I tried so hard to control my circumstances through food.  What a horrible idea!  As I neared 300 pounds, I knew something needed to change.  It was my focus.  I stopped focusing on the problem and the food and I started bringing it to God.  When I wanted to binge, I prayed.  When I was upset I turned to God instead of the kitchen cabinets.  In no way am I saying it is easy, there were many tears shed and angry words uttered in the process, and it is still an ongoing process, but after losing 90 pounds, and faltering along the way, I can say, without any reservations that turning to God instead of my indulgences made the life changing difference for me.  He is always there for us, no matter how far gone we think we are, no matter what decisions we choose.  The good news is that, according to Ezra 9:9, “God has not deserted us in our bondage.

Are you in bondage?  If you need to make a change, what does that change look like for you?  Remember, it doesn’t need to be a “major” indulgence that keeps you from God, the enemy works in the little things, too.  These substitutes will never resolve the deeper issue in our souls.

 ********************

LET’S PRAY

Father, we come humbly to You today to ask for forgiveness.  We have turned to things other than You for comfort.  We have tried to ease our pain with worldly methods.  We know that You are the only answer.  We know You are the only one who can take our struggles away and give us the love and comfort we desire.  Thank You for the grace and forgiveness You offer every time we falter.  Give us the strength to turn away from the easy fix and to fix our eyes on You.  We ask this in Your Heavenly Name.  Amen.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

What are your broken cisterns?  Where do you turn other than God when the stress gets to be too much or the pain is tangible?  If you have overcome these issues share some practical strategies with us.
