Isn’t is amazing how the Holy Spirit works within us to bring us before the Lord? No matter what we are walking through God is there.  He sees all…He knows all.  He has already planned our path.  We just have to choose which one to travel through.  Don’t get me wrong, I know this can be such a hard decision.

During my teenage years, I did not date that much.  I am not sure if everyone was afraid of my dad or what.  There was a guy that had a ‘fast’ reputation.  I had been riding back and forth with him while we were doing our clinicals through Northeast Community College at the Magnolia Hospital in Corinth, MS.  We had developed a friendship but nothing more.  One day he called to ask me out on a date.  My dad had answered the phone, so he knew who it was.  Dad told me, that I should not go, but that it was up to me.  Do you know how hard that was to turn him down?? I mean, he was cute, on the wild side, exciting, and all that a naïve country girl dreamed of!!!

But, I told him no.  I would assume he knew why.  Dad and I never really spoke of it again, that I remember.  I catch myself wondering what would have happened if I had taken the chance that he would have been a nice guy…you know the one that was just looking for a girl to say ‘no’ and be someone he could love and respect.

Our choices to serve God can be like that.  When we are given an opportunity to serve God by going on a mission trip or serving in the children’s area at our local church, we would be truly amazed at how we are blessed by the love that others give as we are giving to them.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the parents you give us, whether we are born to them or chosen to be a part of their family. We choose to honor them and love them no matter their flaws. Just as you have loved us, flaws and all. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

What Do My Words Really Say?

But let all those who take refuge and put their trust in You rejoice;
let them ever sing and shout for joy,
because You make a covering over them and defend them;
let those also who love Your name be joyful in You and be in high spirits.
Psalm 5:11

Though we are not made righteous by our words, our words are evidence of our righteousness.  They give proof to our relationship with Christ.  Psalm 5:11 says the righteous rejoice, they shout with joy.  These are heartfelt, glorious outbursts of enthusiasm and joy.  Yet I tend to be more restrained for fear of offending. However, as Charles Spurgeon puts it “The ungodly are not half so restrained in their blasphemy as we are in our praise.”  Ouch!

Multiple times in the Book of Psalms alone we are told to rejoice:

Psalm 9:2 NIV
I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing the praises of Your name, O Most High

Psalm 32:11 NASB
Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous ones;

Psalm 33:1 AMP
Rejoice in the Lord, O you [uncompromisingly] righteous [you upright in right standing with God]; for praise is becoming and appropriate for those who are upright [in heart].

Psalm 64:10 NLT
The godly will rejoice in the Lord

Psalm 68:3 NLT
But let the godly rejoice.

I love that Psalm 33:1 says it …’is becoming and appropriate’ for the upright to rejoice. But do my words really matter?

The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life
Proverbs 10:11

The words of the godly encourage (feed, nourish) many
Proverbs 10:21

…the words of the godly save lives.
Proverbs 12:6

I believe the answer is a resounding YES!  My words are a reflection of my relationship with Christ.  They are verbal evidence, living proof of that relationship.  So, I must ask myself:

  • Do my words exalt God; do they speak of my confidence in Him and His protection?  Or do they reflect the doubt of my circumstances?
  • Do my words consistently reflect the joy I have in Christ?  Or is the joy there only when it is smooth sailing?
  • Am I able to rejoice and praise God in the midst of the storm, taking refuge in Him alone?
  • Do my words enrich and encourage other, pointing the way back to my God?  What do my words really say about my God?

Father God, thank You so much for Your blessings in my life.  I lift up Your Holy Name.  Let my words be a joyful reflection of Your love, offering a glimpse of what life with You is like.  May my words be consistent and my rejoicing unrestrained.  In Your precious and Holy Name I pray.  Amen, so be it.

Crockpot Pork Tacos

If your idea of Mexican food is based on the dollar menu at Taco Bell, you are in for a treat!  Authentic Mexican food is easy to make at home and is quite healthy for you.  This Monday was Cinco de Mayo, so I made these Crockpot Pork Tacos, and they were muy delicioso!

In Mexico, and in authentic Mexican restaurants here in California, there is no shredded lettuce or cheddar cheese.  Tacos are simple and small and are often eaten on-the-go, so they’re not all covered in sauces or messy vegetables.  Chopped onions and cilantro are usually the only thing you’ll see, with a squeeze of lime.  I added avocado to mine because it pairs great with the pork.  It’s a traditional accompaniment to tacos and adds a creamy note to balance out the sharpness of the raw onions.

As far as the pork goes, I usually use a big shoulder roast, but you can use whatever pork roast you like.  The seasoning is simple here, but you can spice it up as much as you want.  Try adding a can of chipotles in adobo sauce for a smoky flavor, or a jar of salsa verde to the crockpot.

Finally, tacos are kind of like sandwiches.  You can make a thousand different kinds of sandwiches and all are tasty.  But if you only ever eat a turkey sandwich, you may never know how much you’d love a Reuben.  So:  if taco night at your house always means ground beef and diced tomatoes, you owe it to yourself to try something new.  Ready?  Vamanos!

Crockpot Pork Tacos

Ingredients:

  • 1 large pork roast, 2 or 3 pounds
  • 2 tablespoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, roughly chopped
  • 1/2 red onion, diced
  • 1 or 2 avocados, sliced or diced
  • corn tortillas
  • lime or lemon wedges, to serve

Directions:

  1. Combine the salt, garlic powder, and cumin, and rub all over the outside of the pork roast.  Place in your crockpot and cook for 8 hours on low.  When done, the pork should pull apart easily.
  2. Warm up your tortillas:  I wrap a few tortillas in a clean, damp dish towel and microwave for 20 seconds.  If you try to use them cold, they’ll crack!
  3. Shred your pork with two forks, or chop roughly.  To serve, put about 1/3 cup of shredded pork in the center of a tortilla.  Sprinkle with cilantro, onion, and avocado.  Squeeze lime over taco.  Eat several.  Don’t wipe your hands on your pants!

If you have leftovers, and I always do, I usually skip the tortilla and just eat the pork, reheated in the microwave, covered in cilantro, onions, and avocado.  Skip the carbs, and squeeze lots of lime!

God Will Provide the Lamb

And Isaac said to Abraham, My father! And he said, Here I am, my son.
[Isaac] said, See, here are the fire and the wood,
but where is the lamb for the burnt sacrifice?
Abraham said, My son, God Himself will provide a lamb for the burnt offering.
So the two went on together.
Genesis 22:7-8

We all know the story.  Abraham is asked to give the ultimate sacrifice.  He obeys and, at the last minute, as Abraham is about to kill his son…God stops him.  He hears a word from the Lord.  It was a test to see if Abraham was willing to be obedient, and he was.

It’s almost beyond our comprehension, right?  That we would take our child by the hand and lead them to a place where we knew we would take his life.  Abraham truly loved God and trusted Him above all else.  He knew that if God made a covenant with him that He would follow through.  Remember, Isaac was the promise that Abraham would be the father to many nations.  But how would that happen if God was telling Abraham to kill Isaac?  Abraham believed that God would provide.  As the two walked up the mountain, Abraham trusted His Creator.  Abraham built the altar…still no word from God.  He laid Isaac on the altar…God still had not provided.   Abraham took the knife to sacrifice his son…and still no provision.  Then a word from God came, saying the sweetest words that Abraham had ever heard, telling him not to lay a hand on Isaac.

But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said,
Abraham, Abraham! He answered, Here I am.
And He said, Do not lay your hand on the lad or do anything to him;
for now I know that you fear and revere God,
since you have not held back from Me
or begrudged giving Me your son, your only son.
Verses 11 and 12

Abraham then saw a ram and offered it up to God. He even called the very place, “The Eternal One Will Provide.”

In verse 8, Abraham states, “…God will Himself provide the lamb….”  What is it that God is asking you to do today?  Is it something you are putting before God that He’s asking you to sacrifice?  Maybe it is your time. I know today He asked me to step out of myself and do flood relief cleanup.  Oh yes, it was a beautiful day on the beach, the last pretty day for a while and I would’ve loved to relax but I knew my time was better spent helping clean houses that were still saturated.

Friend, if this is you and you don’t know what God is asking or telling you He wants you to give up, I encourage you to spend some time at His feet, praying and seeking His will for your life.  Prepare your heart to hear and then be obedient.  It may be a test—like Abraham’s—or it may be for your own good. But this we know for sure…it will be for His glory!

Let us pray:  Dear Lord, thank You for always providing a lamb.  We are in awe of Your love for us and Your sovereignty.  Thank You for guiding us and asking us to do Your will.  And that we can have faith that no matter what…You have our best interest at heart.  Your will is perfect and I hope that I would lay down my life to serve You.  Help us to listen, and prepare our hearts to be willing to serve You.  We love You so much!  In Your Son’s name we pray, amen.

The Cross bore the brunt of the hate, but Jesus still won.  He beat the persecution and the evil so that we could live in eternity.  The prophets knew this was coming, and we know that it happened.  We know the joy and the rewards that await in Heaven, and that should get us through these days of hate and pain.

Haven’t we all been there…that place where we have come to a crossroad?  We have to decide whether we are going to follow God or suppress the Holy Spirit within us.  When we do walk against the teachings of God we can find refuge in Him when we repent.

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.
Proverbs 4:23

What does the phrase ‘guard your heart‘ mean to you?  Does this promote an image of someone in armour welding a sword or perhaps putting a wall around your heart?  In the song Aaron says “I just don’t understand these lies I’ve been believing”…and I thought of David and Bathsheba  (2 Samuel 11-12).  David had decided to stay home while his troops were away at war. One evening, looking off his rooftop, he spied a woman bathing.  Instead of guarding his heart he let it be filled with lust and then thoughts of adultery.

I am sure,in his mind, he thought he would not get caught. Tthen when Bathsheba sent word she was pregnant, his thoughts turned to lying to cover up what had occurred.  David sent for her husband in hopes that Uriah would sleep with his wife.  When Uriah arrived, David sent him to be with his wife.  Uriah would not lie with her, instead sleeping in the doorway of his home.  When David realized his plan was not working he decided to rid himself of being found in adultery.  So he sent Uriah back to fight, with orders to the commander to put him at the front of the fighting and to remove themselves from Uriah so he would be killed.  There are several times here that King David could have listened to the Holy Spirit, but chose instead to ignore Him.

Our God is one who allows freewill. Once David took Bathsheba into his home, after the mourning period, he married her. Then she gave birth to their son. At this time, Nathan was the prophet. God sent Nathan to David with a story about two men, one rich, one poor. The story, as it unfolded, enraged David. Then Nathan told David that he was the rich man.  David was shocked.  He humbled himself and God was merciful to him, but God would take the life of the child and bring conflict within David’s family.  David did not become haughty and deny what he had done.  David was assured that his God is merciful and would not destroy him.

If David could be forgiven of what he had done…then how much more can we be forgiven if we only humble ourselves and seek God’s face!  We have the Scriptures to help us through the troubles that come against us. By guarding our hearts and thoughts, taking each thought captive, identifying it and naming what it is, we can become stronger and assist others who have similar circumstances.

Father, we thank You for Your redemption.  We stand before You wanting to feel Your loving arms around us.  You are awesome in power and magnificence. Thank You for the history of our heritage.  Thank You for adopting us into Your family.  In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Persecuted In The Present Tense

In this last of the Beatitudes, Jesus offers encouragement to those who suffer for His sake.  This Beatitude carries on the thought from the previous one, but this time Jesus makes it personal: not just “those who have been persecuted,” but “you when they revile you and persecute you.”

Verse 10
Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Verse 11
Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you,
and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.

Clearly Jesus expected His followers to be ill-treated, and He speaks of this ill-treatment in three ways: reviling them, persecuting them, and saying all kinds of evil against them.

Reviling comes when you are insulted or verbally abused because of your faith. The early Christians were mocked because of their belief in the Resurrection. They were called “atheists” because they denied the Roman deities and believed in a God the Roman government did not recognize. The Jews considered them heretics and blasphemers because they identified Jesus as God.

By persecuting I think we can understand Jesus to mean what usually comes to mind: physical abuse, and blatant singling out for “special treatment” on account of one’s faith. This may encompass the other two (reviling and speaking evil of someone), but I think it also brings in beatings, political pressure and punishment, social restriction, and so on. Whenever Christians are denied advancement—either politically, or in the workplace—on account of their faith, or are in other ways treated differently and adversely because they are Christians, persecution is taking place.

Say all kinds of evil against you falsely covers false accusations brought against a Christian to sully his or her reputation, often to justify persecution. In the early church, the Christian sacrament of communion was said to be an orgy, with the participants engaging in illicit sexual behavior and cannibalism. Whether or not this was a genuine misunderstanding of the Christian “love meal,” wherein the symbolic body and blood of Christ is consumed, or a deliberate distortion, it didn’t help the Christians gain favor in the world.

Not only are Christians blessed when they are persecuted, but they should, in fact, rejoice and be glad.  Why?  Because ‘your reward is great in heaven.’

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward [is] great in heaven;
for in the same way they persecuted the prophets [who were] before you.
Verse 12

Note that this is in the present tense.  This means that the heavenly reward that belongs to the ill-treated Christian is not some future hope, but it is a present reality.  Because the Christian is willing to suffer reviling, persecution, and character assassination for the sake of Jesus, he or she is blessed.  And what’s more, the Christian can–and should–rejoice and be glad in the face of such abuse, because God has already granted him or her a reward in heaven.  What is that reward?  Jesus doesn’t say.  But it should be enough to know that the Lord knows what we go through for His sake and, while He doesn’t promise to make life easier here, He does assure us that we already have something infinitely better waiting for us in eternity.

In the midst of the madness of this world it is easy to get caught up in our circumstances and lose sight of what truly matters—-Him.  Focus on Him. Where in the midst of your madness do you see Him working?  He is always there; He promises never to leave us or forsake us.

And my most favorite promise to hold onto is-

Furthermore, we know that God causes everything to work together for the good
of those who love God and are called in accordance with his purpose;
Romans 8:28

God will always use our circumstances and situations and work them together for our good!  Let hope be the anchor in the fall.

Get Results in Your Weight and Fitness in this Season of Life

“I have been doing this work out for the past ten years, why am I not seeing any results?”  Have you ever felt like that like?  Trust me; if anyone likes routine and schedules, it is me.  But even with a routine, workout and exercise programs have to change or our fitness level and weight begins to plateau.  Don’t get in the habit of doing the same thing over and over—that will get you stuck. Change the type, intensity, or duration of your exercise.

Have you ever said, “When I used to work out, I did _______; now I can’t stick with anything…”?  The reason is your life and body may be different now. You are a busy woman. Think back…how was your life when you were consistent? How is it different from today? If you get into the habit of thinking you have to exercise the way you once did, exercise may never become a habit for you.

Over the past couple of years, my life has gone through some major changes. Prior to these events, I had a set schedule and, although I changed my exercise with intensity and type, my schedule and routine were consistent. With a new schedule and different responsibilities, I had to change my way of thinking of when I should exercise (if I wanted to get in any type of work out). If I tried to do what I had done up until this point, I would have quit. It simply does not work now.

The Bible tells us,

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven.
Ecclesiastes 3:1

I am in a new season of life and my old way of thinking needed to change. I can’t get frustrated because I can’t do what I once did. It’s a season to create new habits.

I’m curious…
