Joy

We have now entered the season of Lent.  For many Christians, Lent is taken as a time of preparation for the celebration of Easter where God miraculously redeemed mankind by resurrecting His Son from the dead. It is also a time to consider what Jesus said and did; and how we should be living in light of His Words.  ✞ ♥

During this season, here on the Seeking Him devotional blog, we have chosen to focus our devotionals on Jesus’ instructions and admonition communicated in Matthew chapter 5—the Beatitudes.  Jesus said, “Blessed are…” and He went on to give instruction as to how to be “blessed.”  To be ‘blessed’ is to ‘be happy, or to be envied.’   Truly for the Christian, we ARE blessed—oh, how very blessed we are!  Those who observe our lives should clearly be able to tell that we ARE blessed—and that we KNOW it! ✞ ♥

Please consider Jesus’ instructions along with us.  We pray that our words will encourage you and spur you on to be prepare your hearts for the joyous celebration of His Resurrection!  ✞ ♥

Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

One summer our family travelled by Greyhound bus from Walnut, MS to Fresno, CA to spend a few days with my mom’s newly-found family. It was a three day  (and night) trip there and back…while spending three or four days in California.

It was such an adventure. Mom who was allergic to anything that bites had a reaction to red ants;  my brother, Terry, got so blistered from the sun that he had ‘bubbles’ on his back…and Dad and I didn’t have anything go wrong.

There was this one thing that has stuck with me though—Aunt Ramona recanted a dream.  She says she was dreaming and in it she was weeping for joy because she was about to touch the feet of Jesus.  Her husband, being concerned, woke her up because she was crying out in her sleep.  She says she fussed at him because she was that close.

I can only imagine what that dream must have felt like—the joy, the excitement, the pure worship that was in her heart!  What a precious gift she received.  I want to have dreams like that so, one day, when I stand before my Savior, I can say, ‘I practiced this in my dreams.’  Although this still would not prepare me for the awesome experience of being among all that is Holy and Pure.

The Pure

The Greek word for “pure” is katharos (used 27 times in the New Testament).  Fundamentally, it signifies that which is clean, or free from contaminating substance (cf. Danker et al., Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, 489).  Or as William Barclay contended “that with a spiritual import, ‘pure’ may describe the heart that is free of unadulterated “motives” (Commentary on Matthew, I.101).   (https://www.christiancourier.com/articles/610-who-are-the-pure-in-heart)

I feel that this “being pure” should be the goal of every Christian. To clear our minds of what others may feel or perceive except from the Holy Spirit. When we listen to the ungodly and go to them for advice we are most usually led astray because they speak from a world view. But when we seek Godly counsel from those who dwell daily in God’s presence we should be able to quickly discern what is evil and different from what counsel we would have gotten from our worldly friends.

As we seek to have pure hearts, it would follow that our thoughts would have to follow as well. What does it look like to have pure thoughts? To me it would mean guarding what I read, what I watch, and what I participate in. I guess you would call me a God Nerd. Not a Bible Thumper, but a God Nerd. Now that does not mean that I do not have my weaknesses. I still do, but I do my best to not participate or indulge in them.

Father, as we learn to trust You and know Your Word more, I say ‘Thank You’ for your love, acceptance, and encouragement that is present each day. Help me give away what you have given to me. I want to learn to serve you more and to serve your people with joy in my heart!  In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Just Be Held

psalmshymnsspiritualsongskjv

Hold it all together Everybody needs you strong
But  life hits you out of nowhere
And barely leaves you holding on

And when you’re tired of fighting
Chained by your  control
There’s freedom in surrender
Lay it down and let it go

So when you’re on your knees and answers seem so far away
You’re not alone, stop holding on and just be held
Your world’s not falling  apart, its falling into place
I’m on the throne, stop holding on and just  be held
Just be held,  just be held

If your eyes are on the storm
You’ll wonder if I love you  still
But if your eyes are on the Cross
You’ll know I always have and I  always will

And not a tear is wasted
In time, you’ll understand
I’m  painting beauty with the ashes
Your life is in My hands

Lift your hands, lift your eyes
In the storm is where  you’ll find Me
And where you are, I’ll hold your heart
I’ll hold your  heart
Come to Me, find your rest
In the arms of the God who won’t let  go

As we travel through life, we often come to a crossroad.  Most of us choose our paths without thinking beyond today or tomorrow.  We make our choices on what feels good, not thinking about the eternal  consequences.  Then once we are on the chosen path we become confused and sometimes angry with the outcome. Sound familiar?  I know…I have been there.  My choices twenty-five years ago affect me now, today.  These are through regrets, unrecognized dreams and heartbreak. If I chose to stay there, I can drown and succumb to the guilt and shame.  But I chose not to!  I chose to let it go and let God HOLD ME!

Feeling His loving, forgiving, comforting arms around me is my only true Father I have ever known.  There are no strings attached,;He does not want anything from me other than for me to serve Him with my whole heart and let others know of how He loved me.  As stained and ugly as I was, He loves me.  He wants to tear away the scars, and replace them all with His love, grace and mercy.  I do not deserve any of it.  Only through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus am I able to enter the holy Presence of God, our Creator.  And for that I will be forever grateful.

 *  ~  *  ~   ♥  ~  ✞  ~  ♥    ~  *  ~  *

Father, thank You for loving me enough then, to send Your Son Jesus to atone for me.  Forgive me for the choices I have made that have not honored You. Forgive me for the words I have spoken out of fear, anger and disappointment.  Let me learn from Your examples in Scripture to be a better, mom, sister, daughter, wife and friend.  In Jesus’ name I ask these things, Amen.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Matthew 5:7 NIV

The word mercy for me conjures up memories of scenes from movies portraying Christ.  Dictionary.com gave this meaning: “compassionate or kindly forbearance shown toward an offender, an enemy, or other person in one’s power; compassion, pity, or benevolence: Have mercy on the poor sinner”. How many times have we been shown mercy in our DAILY walk?  I shudder to think of how I may unknowingly have offended my heavenly Father.

Then I began to think, “How do I show mercy to others?”  Do I become short when I am pressed for time and someone asks me questions?  Yes, unfortunately I feel like I do sometimes.  My boss is an excellent example of showing mercy and being fair.  No matter how busy she is, she takes the time to speak with that person and make them feel valued.

Christ is a perfect example of mercy.  When the woman who was caught in adultery was brought before Jesus for Him to condemn and punish her, He showed her mercy.  He was gentle in His reproach to the men of the synagogue, to the point that they slowly turned away, one by one (see John 8:1-11).  He did not need to be told her background…He already knew her story.  But He also knew the hearts of the men who had brought her to Him.  Jesus loves us unconditionally, and He wants to know us.  His Father will discipline us when necessary, but Jesus will always intercede on our behalf.

My mom told me one day she was mad at me because of a dream she had.  It was this:  Someone had broken into our store.  She had hit the man over the head with a cast iron skillet and knocked him unconscious.  She told me to watch over the man and make sure he didn’t leave while she went to get help.  When she came back she was shocked to see that I was dressing the man’s head wounds! She laughed and I said, ‘Well that sounds like me doesn’t it?’  She just shook her head.

I want to continue to be that person and show compassion and mercy toward others.  When we pray and listen to the Holy Spirit, He will direct our paths and help guide us in our choices.  This will go so far in our own relationships with family and friends.  Remember there are those who watch and learn from your actions and reactions.  Just remember you can start a new way of thinking today. No matter how old you are, with the Holy Spirit, you can begin practicing mercy and compassion toward others.  Once you begin to extend it in all situations, you will feel a new lease on life…a refreshing of your spirit.

We Fall Down

We fall down, we lay our crowns
At the feet of Jesus
The greatness of mercy and love
At the feet of Jesus

And we cry holy, holy, holy
We cry holy, holy, holy
We cry holy, holy, holy is the Lamb

What a vivid image of worshipping our Lord and Saviour!  He made the ultimate sacrifice for you and me.  I know I am thankful for His love and mercy that is granted to me each and every day.  I am so often reminded of who He is and what He means to me.  He has forgiven me so much and I owe Him my life. After my son was born, I dedicated him to God.  I was so thankful for this child that was left in my care.  With the help of others, their prayers, and much of my own, my son has grown up to be a wonderful man of God.  He is still growing in the Lord and is pursuing a life that would be pleasing to our Father.  My step-daughter, who came to live with us about two years ago, has changed and grown so much.  I love watching what God is doing in her life.  She is pursuing God with a passion.  There were a few bumps in the road, but that is becoming less and less.  I have the daughter I never had and I am privileged to have her in my life.

May this song bless you with it’s simplicity!

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled.
Matthew 5:6

Ever had that overwhelming desire to know our Creator and God more fully?  To know His forgiveness is complete?  Sure you have…me, too!  As we walk through our life there are those moments when the desire is so intense that we want to devour every bit of information we can glean.

As a deer longs for streams of water, so I long for You, God.
I thirst for God, the living God. When can I come and appear before God?
Psalms 42:1-2 HCSB

God, You are my God; I eagerly seek You. I thirst for You;
my body faints for You in a land that is dry, desolate, and without water.
So I gaze on You in the sanctuary to see Your strength and Your glory.
Psalms 63:1-2 HCSB

How can we satisfy our hunger and thirst for God?

  • By becoming immersed in His Word
  • By listening to music that uplifts us
  • By simply being still and listening to His creation that is all around us

When was the last time you sat in communion with God?  I cannot remember the last time I was able to sit for more than 2 minutes and listen for God.

You may say, ‘How can I hear God?’  That is as simple as listening and observing God’s creation.  Most of us have a devotional time.  When we are in those moments, is it by ourselves, with no distractions, no television on to distract or the radio?  Do we listen to our devotion while we are driving to work?

Barnes’ Notes on the New Testament says,

“Never was there a desire to be holy, which God was not willing to gratify.  And the gospel of Christ was made to satisfy all who truly desire to be holy.”

This past weekend, our pastor continued his teaching on  God, Our Deliverer.  He stated that no matter how many times we fail, we should not give up on repentance, and coming to know our heavenly Father more intimately.  The evil one would love nothing more than to discourage you from seeking the knowledge, peace, and comfort that only God can provide.

Just as the woman at the well asked Jesus about the living water He spoke of and explained, we can continue throughout our lives seeking for it as well.  It is not given just once, but continuously as we seek to know Him (John 4:14).  God wants no one to perish. He has adopted us, grafted us into His family, and He will fight to keep us in it.  Oh, what a wonderful Father we serve!

Father, we humbly thank You and praise You for Your mercy and grace so freely given.  Forgive us for when we fail to admit our shortcomings and our sins to You.  Help us to rid ourselves of our selfish pride and arrogance and seek to model our lives after Your Son, Jesus.  Holy Spirit, be with us and guide us.  Show us when we stray and help us turn back to our Father. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!

God’s Not Dead

psalmshymnsspiritualsongskjv

Let love explode and bring the dead to life
A love so bold to see a revolution somehow
Let love explode and bring the dead to life
A love so bold to bring a revolution somehow
Now I’m lost in your freedom, and this world I’ll overcome
My God’s not dead; He’s surely alive
He’s living on the inside roaring like a lion
Let hope arise and make the darkness hide
My faith is dead, I need a resurrection somehow
Now I’m lost in your freedom, and this world I’ll overcome
Let Heaven roar, and fire fall
Come shake the ground with the sound of revival
My God’s not dead; He’s surely alive
He’s living on the inside roaring like a lion

We went to see the movie “God’s Not Dead” this past Friday night.  It is such a great movie!  I hope you get the chance to see it if you have not had the chance yet. This touches on the need to equip our school-age children with the ability to argue why they believe in God and know who God is.

What shocked me was that so many would deny the existence of God in a classroom and not think about the consequences.  I mean, would you write a statement that says, ‘God is Dead’ to get out of taking a class?  I was horrified at the thought!  My God IS alive and well.  Sometimes I do take Him and His mercy for granted and do things I know I have meant to give up…but to write, ‘God is Dead’ is just wrong.

I grew up in a home where I could discuss the Bible with my mom.  She was very knowledgeable and was willing to share her faith.  Where we grew up we were able to walk to a small Baptist church when my brother and I wanted to attend. She did not make us.  It was up to us.  When we were old enough she would go and sit with us to make sure we would behave, and not embarrass her or dad. After a while she would let us go by ourselves.  We would go to Sunday School and attend the worship service, then go home.  From an early age, our acceptance of God was left up to us.

As we grew older we were baptized, became members, served when we could, grew up, and moved away.  God was always there.  Nudging us, loving us, and disciplining us when we deserved it.  Growing up I felt very protected and sheltered.  For that I am thankful.  There are things I don’t need to know…things I don’t want to know.  I want to be able to take people at their face value and not have to read between the lines.

When I attended college, I was not presented the challenge to deny my faith.  I may not have walked in it as I should, but I also do not believe I would have denied Him.  As we think and pray about our schools and colleges, I pray that we as parents are equipping our kids with the ability to defend their faith and their belief in our God.  It may rest on their ability to do that and for them to know why they believe.  Not just because mom and dad, or aunt or grandma goes to church.  Or, to say, ‘I believe because my family does.’  They have to make their relationship with God personal and real.  This can be helped along by our prayers for our children.

*  ~  *  ~    ♥ ~  ✞  ~ ♥    ~  *  ~  *

Father, thank You!  Thank You for the opportunity to share Your word and Your love with others. Thank You for the opportunity to defend our faith. Let us continue to grow in our confidence of Your Word.  Help us develop an ear to hear the Holy Spirit speaking, and the ability to be still and know more fully who You are.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Jesus’ Example of Meekness

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:5

What a wonderful statement for us to follow!  When we first hear the word meek, we think of someone who is picked on…someone who is a victim.  But meekness does not mean that at all.  When I think of someone who is meek I think of someone who wants or desires to serve God and others.  It does not mean you are a doormat; rather someone who, if pushed, can take care of themselves.  The meek have a way about them, a way of reproving you, correcting you, teaching you with gentleness. When you are in their presence you feel safe and accepted.

Jesus is the perfect example of meekness in action.  His way was to teach and to be humble in whatever He strove to do.  He did become angry, but rightly so.  He had to drive away those who would cheapen His Father’s house (as described in Matthew 21:11-13).

The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”
Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there.
He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves.
“It is written,” He said to them, “‘My House will be called a house of prayer,’
but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”

I would imagine God was very pleased with His Son being zealous for the people and reminding them of what is holy and acceptable activity in the Temple. It definitely was not stealing from others.

Another description of Jesus’ meekness and obedience to His Father is found in Matthew 26:47-52:

While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived.
With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs,
sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people.
Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.”
Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.
Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.” Then the men stepped forward,
seized Jesus and arrested him.
With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out
and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him,
“for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.
Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and He will at once
put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?
But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”

Jesus reminds us here that there is a time and a place to protect yourself from injustice.  Jesus knew what the outcome was going to be.  He chose to obey what had been determined from the beginning of time—before the temple, the people—even the world was formed and breathed into existence.

Let us do our best this week to wait on God.  Let Him speak to us through the Holy Spirit and follow Christ’s example in listening and waiting.  This can be down at home, at work, and at our place of worship.  Wherever you serve or work, let us practice meekness.  When that irritating person comes into our cubicle, let us relax and really listen to what that person is saying. When your child whines to you, stop and listen. When you husband calls to see how you are doing, don’t assume it is to complain or criticize; praise him on how he is doing as a father to your children and as husband to you.  Practice meekness.  You will be blessed.

 * ~ ♥ ~ ✞ ~ ♥~ *

Father, thank You for giving us an example of meekness that we can follow everyday.  Help us to slow down and know that You are God.  As we go through the remaining weeks before Easter, let our thoughts be about You and Your sacrifice for us on the Cross.  We thank You, Father, for we know You are worthy!  We pray in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

During the first night of our Whiteboard Small Group Study, everyone was asked what their favorite verse was.  Then this brought about speaking about the books of the Holy Bible and being able to repeat them in order.  The person leading the group remembered this song. He said it was his favorite and how it shows how God has/is faithful to all who would and do believe.

What a great song to be able to play for our unbelieving friends.  I pray that it ministers to you as it did to me.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Matthew 5:4

For those that are in mourning over the loss of a loved one, loss of a job, loss of any type that would cause you to be sad..know that God is always by your side to pick you up and help you with whatever you are going through.

…And provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor.

When I Survey The Wondrous Cross

psalmshymnsspiritualsongskjv

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood

See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

His dying crimson, like a robe,
Spreads o’er His body on the tree;
Then I am dead to all the globe,
And all the globe is dead to me.

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

To Christ, who won for sinners grace
By bitter grief and anguish sore,
Be praise from all the ransomed race
Forever and forevermore.

What a wonderfully written hymn!  This is one is so God-breathed.  As the Holy Spirit led, Isaac Watts wrote.  It is interesting, while reading the biography of Watts, how he was a Nonconformist.  He did not go by the traditional teachings of his era, he was always outspoken.  He had a natural gift for rhyming and was punished for using it.

As we begin to think about Easter and what Christ’s death on the Cross means for each of us, I would ask that you think about keeping a journal.  Write down prayers, thoughts, praises, or anything that you believe would help you celebrate Easter with a new viewpoint in the years to come.

Father, I ask that You watch over each of us during the Lent season.  Help us to see and learn more about what the Cross means for us.  Help us to see our salvation in a new way.  We love You and want to know You more.  We want a more intimate relationship with You.  Thank You, Lord!  In Jesus’ Name, we pray.  Amen.
