Winning Him Without Words: Motivated By Agape Love – Crossing a Threshold

Motivated By Agape Love

I want to piggyback on the last paragraph of Sarah’s section from yesterday. It flows right into my section today. Let’s read it again:

John kept his eyes on Jesus. He knew it wasn’t about him but about the mighty God he served. And that’s where we find inspiration. John’s story wasn’t about him; it was about Jesus. Just as our story isn’t about us; it’s about preparing the way for Jesus in the life of our husband (pg. 152, emphasis mine).

Jesus calls us to live out agape love toward our spouse. Agape love is a selfless, sacrificial, unconditional form of love. Agape is the love that Christ has for each one of us. Agape love is based upon a decision, not a feeling. When you live out agape love, you choose to love, despite the fact that you have been hurt. You choose to overlook the ways your spouse has slighted you. You choose to forgive your spouse for the way he has hurt you.

You choose to do all of this because Christ has done this for you. You choose to do this to honor God. You choose to love your spouse without expectation. You choose to love despite the cost.

Jesus loves every single one of us this way. Even Peter, who denied Jesus three times, was able to redeem himself in John 21:15-17 by choosing Jesus three times. If you really stop and think about that, it is pretty incredible. We will make mistakes, sometimes big ones, but Jesus still has agape love for us. We can honor Him by choosing to live out agape love toward the one we have pledged to spend our lives with.

But, you make the choice to love this way. Once you do, Jesus supplies the ability. Because we absolutely cannot do this of our own will. It is impossible. We are only able to love this way because of Christ working in us. The question is: Can you sacrifice your own needs, wants, and desires and truly love your husband with an agape form of love that is not based on anything other than choosing to love him like Christ loves you?

Crossing a Threshold

What are you willing to risk for your unbelieving husband to know Jesus? (pg. 156)

Have you ever prayed the most dangerous prayer? I have. But, I’ll admit the truth to you all since I have from the beginning of this study. I wanted this prayer answered in my way. I was not prepared for anything bad or negative to happen. I was not prepared to risk anything for my husband to know Jesus. I prayed the prayer believing that the Lord would put some things in my husband’s life and then his eyes would be opened. Ta-da! Magic. My hubby would fall to his feet and praise Jesus.

But, to really pray this prayer and sincerely mean it, we have to be loving our husbands with agape love.

The path of the spiritually mismatched is not an easy one. We must be willing to give up the life we have known and live the life that Christ wants us to live. This means sacrificing everything. Everything.

When we can finally do that, we allow God into those places that we have unintentionally closed off from Him. Those places that hurt and ache. He can fill those places and show us how to love the way He loves. Even if we have been hurt. Even if we have unforgiveness in our hearts. God cannot work in those places if we cannot open ourselves up and let Him in to change us.

Are you ready to cross that threshold?

***

Let’s Pray: Father, please reveal any areas of my life that I have unintentionally closed off from you. Help me to confront these issues today, Lord, and to release each one of them to you. I choose today to let you in to those dark, hurtful places. Please give me peace and a supernatural strength as I hand over each one of these issues to you and trust completely in your unfailing love and grace. Teach me how to begin loving my husband with an agape love, the way that you love us, Lord. In Jesus precious and holy name I pray, Amen!

Your Assignment: Pray and ask the Lord to show you what areas of your life you are holding back from him; what is holding you back from loving your husband with an agape love. Release these things to Jesus. Let Him in to those places that you have closed off; the places where you hurt and ache; the places where you hold onto unmet expectations. Let today mark a turning point in your relationship with the Lord and with your husband. Leave a comment below and let me know what you think of these sections in our book. What insights did you glean? What did you learn?

GCH: What’s on Your Plate? – Food for Thought by Christi

~FEAR NOT ~ STAND STILL ~

~HOLD YOUR GROUND~

Exodus 14:13  — Moses told the people, Fear not; stand still (firm, confident, undismayed) and see the salvation of the Lord which He will work for you today.

Ephesians 6:13-14…Therefore put on God’s complete armor, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day [of danger], and, having done all [the crisis demands], to stand [firmly in your place]. Stand therefore [hold your ground], having tightened the belt of truth around your loins and having put on the breastplate of integrity and of moral rectitude and right standing with God.

Every Friday, here at Girlfriends Coffee Hour, is my prayer day where I pray over every single prayer request that has come in that week.   I take each prayer request and hold them in my hand, and pray over each and every one of them.  I then place them in my God Box, after they’ve been prayed over, as a symbol of placing each request at the foot of Jesus, and leaving them there.

Some of these requests just break my heart.  I cry over them!  I can’t imagine the pain that some people are going through.  Broken marriages.  Wayward kids.  Cancer.  Financial strain.  And so much more!

What I hear most from those posting the requests is, “What do I do when I’ve done all that I know to do?”  I’ve always answered “You leave it in God’s hands and let Him work!”

Sometimes it is easier to leave it in God’s hands, than other times.

As you can see from the two scriptures above, we are instructed after having done all that the crisis demands, we are to STAND!  STAND FIRM.  DON’T WAVER.  DON’T BUDGE!  HOLD YOUR GROUND!

What does it mean to STAND?  Do I just stand around waiting for God to do something?  What it means to me is that we CHOOSE to believe God.  We choose to trust Him.  We choose to believe that He has our best interest at heart.  We choose to believe that He loves us and His plan for our life is for a fulfilled future, and hope!

We don’t allow our circumstances to cause us to waver to the left, or to the right.  We don’t waver with “But God….”  “What if…..”  “Maybe I should just ….”  NO!  None of those!  You simply do all that God has commanded you to do in that situation, and when you’ve done everything that you know to do….You Step Away From It and ALLOW GOD TO MOVE!!!

Do not allow Satan to lead you astray in taking the situation back again.  Maybe God isn’t working as fast as you think He should be.  Maybe you’re not seeing the results you had hoped you would.  Whatever you are seeing, do not allow Satan to lead you away from God and what He is doing in your life.  REST in knowing that God Is In Control!  He does have YOUR BEST INTEREST at heart!  Trust that.  No matter how hard it may be.  TRUST HIM!  STAND FIRM.

May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else.  May He strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all His holy ones.

Be blessed!

Christi Wilson

When we start thinking of new bible studies, we always look for something that will be interesting, and life-changing!  When we decided upon this next study, we felt it was the perfect study for our Singles Group!  We hope you agree!

Every woman was once a little girl. And every little girl holds in her heart her most precious dreams. She longs to be swept up into a romance, to play an irreplaceable role in a great adventure, to be the beauty of the story. Those desires are far more than child’s play. They are the secret to the feminine heart.  And yet―how many women do you know who ever find that life? As the years pass by, the heart of a woman gets pushed aside, wounded, buried. She finds no romance except in novels, no adventure except on television, and she doubts very much that she will ever be the Beauty in any tale.

Most women think they have to settle for a life of efficiency and duty, chores, and errands, striving to be the women they “ought” to be but often feeling they have failed. Sadly, too many messages for Christen women add to the pressure. “Do these ten things, and you will be a godly woman.” The effect has not been good on the feminine soul. But her heart is still there. Sometimes when she watches a movie, sometimes in the wee hours of the night, her heart begins to speak again. A thirst rises within her to find the life she was meant to live―the life she dreamed of as a little girl.
.
The message of Captivating is this: Your heart matters more than anything else in all creation. The desires you had as a little girl and the longings you still feel as a woman are telling you of the life God created you to live. He offers to come now as the Hero of your story, to rescue your heart and release you to live as a fully alive and feminine woman. A woman who is truly captivating.
.
In 2001, John Eldredge’s book “Wild at Heart” explored the inner life of Christian men–and became a bestseller. Now, he and his wife Stasi have teamed up to write “Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman’s Soul.”

Crazy Love

Crazy Love

God is LOVE! Crazy, relentless, all-powerful love. Have you ever wondered if we’re missing it? It’s crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe–the Creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and E-minor–loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. Whether you’ve verbalized it yet or not…we all know something is wrong.

Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo?

Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions?

God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do’s and don’ts–it’s falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, as Francis Chan describes it, you will never be the same. Because when you’re wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.

Announcing our Brand New GCH: Victorious Healing Online Bible Study

Through life, we often think recovery is only for alcoholics or drug addicts. Regardless of what issue you may be struggling with in life, whether it is financially, emotionally, through chemical dependency, sexual addictions, food issues, lying, depression, anxiety (just to name a few), we all have a hurt or a struggle that causes us pain and hinders our walk with God.

‘All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God’

Romans 3:23

There is not a struggle or hurt that is greater or lesser than the other; just as there is no one sinner worse than the other. We all need God’s hope, healing and recovery through these hurts.

So many times we try to fix our problems ourselves, finding that we turn right back to the comfort of our faulty coping skills. This blog will help you realize that no matter what your hurt or struggle may be, God wants to give you hope and healing if you will trust and allow Him to. With the blogs, studies and fellowship of this group, you will have the opportunity to begin to feel the freedom and peace of healing from your hurts and struggles.

We are excited you have decided to join us on this journey- so grab your cup of coffee and get ready for the ride!

GCH: What’s on Your Plate? – Creamy Squash Soup with Ginger

Today’s blog post is brought to you by Renee Porter Sullivan, CHt

This recipe was part of a class I took a few months ago through Southwest Institute of Healing Arts.  It was a required class in my Nutrition program.  The class was taught by Chef Rachel Albert.  You can find her website and information on her website The Healthy Cooking Coach.   http://www.thehealthycookingcoach.com/  This squash soup was one of my favorite dishes.  I even made a double batch and froze some in a quart ball canning jar for later.  If you do this make sure you leave an inch or more of space at the top for expansion.  I highly recommend you make extra, you will love this soup.

During my classes with Chef Rachel, I learned she has been recovering from Cancer.  She is doing well these days.  As many of you reading this are all too aware, the financial toll this illness can take is extensive.  Chef Rachel has been paying for her treatments out of pocket.  When I learned of this I wanted to help any way that I could.

Chef Rachel has agreed to allow us to post her recipe on this blog this week, and any of her other recipes; and for that I am very grateful.  I would like to invite all of our readers to go to http://www.thehealthycookingcoach.com/, read Chef Rachel’s story and purchase the wonderful book she has created.  Many of the recipes I will be sharing in the coming weeks will be variations or exact replications of the recipes I have learned from Chef Rachel.  All proceeds from the sale of her book go directly to help with her medical expenses.  I know she will be grateful for financial support as well as your prayers.

One final note, I am honored to be attending a gathering of amazing folks this next April in Ventura, California as Chef Rachel’s assistant.  The gathering is called PrimalCon.  You can learn more about PrimalCon and so much more on the Primal Blueprint website http://primalblueprint.com/products/PrimalCon-Oxnard-2013.html.  This event is sold out but there will be another round in Lake Tahoe later in the year.

Now for the recipe:

Prep: 30 minutes Cooking: 40 minutes Yield: 6 to 8 (1 Cup) servings

I’ve been making this sweet and creamy squash soup for more than 20 years. It makes a great addition to breakfast, lunch, or dinner and freezes well. You can vary the kind of squash you use during the fall, winter, and early spring––or the spices. If you get a not so sweet squash, you can doctor it up with a dash of Stevia or a tablespoon or two of honey, or maple syrup. Note: Do not use a dark or strong-flavored homemade vegetable broth in this recipe. See variations below for using baked squash to reduce peeling and chopping time.

**********

Ingredients:

2 to 3 teaspoons extra virgin coconut oil, clarified butter or ghee

1 medium to large onion, halved and diced or cut into thin slices (1 to 1 1/2 cups)

1/4 teaspoon unrefined, mineral-rich sea salt (Celtic, Lima, Si, Muramato, RealSalt, or Eden)

1 to 2 tablespoons peeled, minced fresh gingerroot

1/2 teaspoon dried, ground ginger

5 to 6 cups halved, seeded, peeled, and cubed uncooked winter squash: Kabocha, Hokaido, buttercup, butternut, sweet dumpling, honey delight or delicate

4 cups filtered water, homemade chicken broth or preservative-free vegetable or chicken broth (you may use part water, part stock or broth), plus more as needed to blend

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper or white pepper, optional

3/4 teaspoon additional sea salt or 1 to 2 tablespoons sweet white, yellow, or mellow miso (reduce by one-half if using salted broth)

1/2 cup preservative-free, full-fat coconut milk or 1 cup rich, homemade almond milk

1/4 teaspoon Stevia extract powder and/or 1 to 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup, optional

1/4 cup finely minced fresh fennel fronds, parsley leaves or chives for garnish

Preparation:

1. Heat oil and onions in a large, heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add sea salt and stir until tender and translucent, 5 to 8 minutes. Add ginger, stir, and cook for one more minute. Add squash and water or broth. Cover, bring to boil, reduce heat, and simmer until tender, 30 to 40 minutes. Meanwhile, wash, spin or pat dry, and chop the garnish, and set aside.

2. Purée the cooked vegetables and liquid from the pot with coconut milk using an immersion blender or in 2 to 3 batches in a blender or food processor until smooth and silky. Add additional water or broth a little at a time as needed to yield 6 to 8 cups of soup. Add sea salt or white miso. Taste and adjust with sweetener as needed. Return the soup to the saucepan and heat gently if serving right away. Do not allow soup to boil.

3. Ladle soup into bowls, garnish, and serve. Transfer to wide mouth jars, allow the soup to cool, then cover, and refrigerate. Freeze whatever you do not plan to consume within 3 days.

Entire recipe with coconut milk: 662 calories, 16 g protein, 84 g carbohydrate (13 g fiber), 29 g fat, 265 mg calcium, 1936 mg sodium

1 cup soup made with coconut milk: 110 calories, 3 g protein, 14 g carbs (2 g fiber), 5 g fat, 44 mg calcium, 322 mg sodium

Variations:

Soothing-Squash Soup with Pie Spice: Replace ginger with 1 teaspoon apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice.

Creamy Squash & Apple Soup: Replace 2 cups of winter squash with 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced. Replace 1 cup of water or broth with apple juice.

Soothing Ginger, Squash & Pear Soup: Replace 2 cups of winter squash with 2 medium, ripe, peeled, cored, and diced pears. Replace 1 cup of water or broth with pear juice.

Cut one large or several small buttercup, butternut or kabocha squash in half from top to bottom (about 2 to 2 ½-pounds worth). Scoop and discard seeds. Arrange squash cut side down on a rimmed baking sheet. Do not add water or foil. Bake in a preheated 400° F oven until soft and juicy, 35 to 45 minutes. Scoop out flesh and discard skin. Add cooked squash (about 3 cups) to sautéed onions in step 2 above with spices and liquid. Cover, bring to boil, and simmer for 15 minutes then purée as above.

Winning Him Without Words: “The Belt of Truth”, “The Breastplate of Righteousness”, “The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace”, “The Shield of Faith”

Have you put on your spiritual armor today? In order to be ready for the spiritual attacks to come, we must prepare for battle every single day. God provides us with a way to fight every battle, but we often choose to fight with our own limited supply of strength. If we turn to Him during our time of need, He will get us through each battle, small or big. He knows the whole picture. He sees the story because, well, He wrote the story. He equips us with armor to help us face every circumstance we will encounter. By donning His armor, we will stand firm against the devil’s schemes. Without our armor, we cannot stand. We cannot be an effective warrior for Christ. So, are you ready to get your armor on?

The Belt of Truth

The enemy will try to deceive us by telling us lies disguised as truth. Remember Eve in the Garden? Satan twisted God’s truth into a believable lie. He made Eve doubt God’s goodness. He made her focus on what God had forbidden instead of what He had blessed her with.

What God really said:

Genesis 2:15-17 – The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden – except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”

What Satan said to Eve:

Genesis 3:1 – The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”

See how sneaky Satan is? His twisting of God’s Word made Eve doubt what the Lord really said.

But, we can stand firm against Satan’s sneaky attacks by having the Belt of Truth around our waists. With God’s Truth, we can rebuke the devil’s lies, schemes, and manipulations. We can turn to Jesus, who is Truth, when the devil tries to deceive us. Jesus will always point us to the truth of God’s Word. So strap on that belt, ladies, and be ready to stand firm against the devil’s attacks!

The Breastplate of Righteousness

Satan wants to attack us where we are most vulnerable. And for many of us, it is right in the heart. It is where our emotions and sense of self-worth stem from. If the devil can get a foothold by playing with your emotions, then he will do it. He knows where we are vulnerable and he will always try to kill and destroy us. It is a scary thing to think about. But it is real. So, protect your heart with the Breastplate of Righteousness which will never cause you to doubt God’s unending love for you and offer a barrier from despair and discouragement that Satan will try to use against you.

The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

Our foundation is Jesus Christ and the Good News of His saving grace. The shoes that God fits us with will allow us to move when the time is right; to share this Good News with others. Satan wants us to think that sharing the gospel is useless and hopeless. So, be ready by putting on the Shoes of the Gospel of Peace and get ready to move when God says “Move!”

The Shield of Faith

Satan will try to throw every fiery dart he can at us. He will try to lure us, tempt us, and deceive us. He will use every weapon in his arsenal to try to discourage us. But with God’s Shield of Faith, we will be able to see past our current circumstances and difficulties to our ultimate victory. We can deflect those darts and run to God’s Word and His unending promises – that He loves us, will never leave us nor forsake us.

Stay firmly rooted in the truth of Jesus and God’s Word. When you are in doubt or feeling discouraged, RUN (don’t walk!) to Jesus. He will help you through whatever you are facing. Place your faith in Him and He will provide.

{Be sure to check back tomorrow for Donna’s post with the rest of the armor!}

*****

Let’s Pray:

Lord, in the matchless name of Jesus, we come before you today asking that you help us to strengthen our armor. Give us the wisdom and knowledge to defend ourselves against Satan’s attacks. Help us know the Truth of your Word when Satan tries to deceive us. Protect our hearts and guide us as we live out our faith daily. Open our eyes to any opportunities to share your Good News with those around us. And, Lord, please help us deflect the fiery darts that the enemy tries to throw at us. Help us to know the truth and to see past our current hardships. Let us look to You, Father, for our every need. Amen.

Your Assignment:

Leave a comment below and tell us which piece of armor discussed today do you have the most difficulty wearing? Do you struggle with the Belt of Truth, the Breastplate of Righteousness, the Shoes of the Gospel of Peace, or the Shield of Faith? Why? Which piece is the easiest for you?

Blessings,

Jennifer
