God our Teacher

Good and upright is the Lord;
therefore he instructs sinners in His ways.
He guides the humble in what is right
and teaches them His way.
Psalms 25:8-9

No one is perfect.  No one is without sin.  If we were, we certainly would not be in this world.  We would be in the glory of God at this very minute.  However, we fall short—way short.  We needed Someone to teach us how we should act and worship in order to reach God’s glory.

Without Someone’s perfect ways and blood, we could not ever hope to reach God’s glory in the end.  We would be looking forward to an eternity of doom.  God instructs us to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior so that we may be reunited with Him in the end and be able to spend eternity in Heaven.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;
teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Colossians 3:16

Jesus becomes our Guide and Teacher once we enter into a relationship with Him.  The relationship works to help teach yourself and others how God expects us to live.  We live in the Word to keep ourselves from falling in line with the world and with Satan. We become wiser the longer we stay in the Word of God and immerse ourselves in our relationship with Christ.  When we become wiser through God, we can help others become closer to God.  By allowing God to be our Teacher, we gain the wisdom to be able to discern what is right and wrong. We become humbled and are able to teach others about God.

Don’t you think this song is actually a prayer—a happy, joyous proclamation of God’s love?   How much our God must thoroughly enjoy hearing His precious possession—us!—sing out,   ♬ ♪ ♬ HalleluJAH!  Your love makes me sing!  ♬ ♪ ♬

And what incredible, awesome company we are in when we do sing ‘halleluJAH!’  In chapter 19 of the Book of Revelations, four times praises to God using the phrase ‘halleluJAH!’ is recorded.  Three times by ‘a great multitude’, and once by the ‘twenty-four elders and the four living creatures’ (who surround the Throne).  WOW!  This is company I want to be in; you, too!

    After these things I heard something like a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God;
  • verse 3
    And a second time they said, “Hallelujah! Her smoke rises up forever and ever.”

    And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who sits on the throne saying, “Amen. Hallelujah!”

This record in the Book of Revelations and a few in Psalms are the only records that tell us of praise being given by using the phrase ‘HalleluJAH!’  In doing a study on it, I found that it is used approximately  22 times in the Psalms.  Here are a few examples….

For great is His gracious love toward us and the LORD’s faithfulness is eternal. Hallelujah!
117:2

Hallelujah! Give thanks to the LORD because He is good, because His mercy endures forever.
106:1

Let everything that breathes praise the Lord. Hallelujah!
150:6

Hallelujah! How good it is to sing to our God for praise is pleasant and lovely.
147:1

There are so very many things we have been blessed with for which we should give praise to our great God!

  • mercy
  • grace
  • salvation
  • eternal life
  • fellowship w/believers
  • sanctification
  • peace
  • His Word

But one of the greatest things that God does for us and gives us is His love.  As the songwriters expressed to Him, “Your love is amazing…steady and unchanging; Your love is a mountain firm beneath my feet; Your love is a mystery—how You gently lift me when I am surrounded—Your love carries me; Your love is surprising…”.  And truly, it is!!!  Below are some of the many verses in the Scriptures which tell us about our God’s love for us…for all mankind.

Who shall ever separate us from Christ’s love? Shall suffering and affliction and tribulation?
Or calamity and distress? Or persecution or hunger or destitution or peril or sword?
Even as it is written, For Thy sake we are put to death all the day long;
We are regarded and counted as sheep for the slaughter.
Yet amid all these things we are more than conquerors
and gain a surpassing victory through Him Who loved us.
For I am persuaded beyond doubt (am sure) that neither death nor life, nor angels
nor principalities, nor things impending and threatening nor things to come, nor powers,
Nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all Creation
will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:35-39

But God demonstrates His own love for us in this:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
John 3:16

This is how God showed His love among us:
He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him.
This is love: not that we loved God,
but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
1 John 4:9 and 10

We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in His love.
God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.
Verse 16

Because Your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise You.
Psalm 63:3

Doesn’t our Father’s steadfast, immeasureable, unconditional, immoveable, unchanging love just make you want to sing?

Being Teachable

Psalms 25:8-9

We have heard the phrase, “You are not too old to learn,” right?  We, as believers, continue to learn every day.  Each day is a new opportunity to learn about the wonder of our God.  He shows us what is available to us.  All we have to do is look and take action.

When we attend a Bible study, we have set certain expectations for ourselves and for the group.  God wants us to seek after Him and be teachable.  We can do this by becoming humble.  We are to ask God to reveal His heart to us and we need to be receptive to His Word.

When the psalmist writes, ‘therefore will He instruct sinners in His way’, he is telling us God wants us to follow the one true path to Heaven—which is through Him and belief in His Son, Jesus.  Then He wants to lead the afflicted in what is right and wants to teach them His way.

When we go through strife, it seems we become more teachable in those moments.  Our defenses are down and we are more willing to receive the instruction of the Holy Spirit.  Why?  Because we are seeking answers that are outside of our own understanding.  While we continue to seek His will for our lives, we will grow in knowledge.  It is only when we become comfortable and complacent that we begin to forget to seek Him first.

Let’s pray,

Father, thank you for your unconditional love. Thank you for sending your son Jesus as an example for us to follow. Thank you for the Holy Spirit, our helper in all things. With praise and thanks and gratitude for your great mercy and grace. Forgive us when we take our eyes off of your will and look at things with our eyes, not with yours. Train us to seek your will, not ours. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Gone Astray?

Are you confused?  Lost?  You don’t know what to do next?  Or have you knowingly wandered off the path you know was set before you?  Remember, God knows everything—all you need to do is ask Him for help and He will guide you.

Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery.
They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High.
That is why He broke them with hard labor;
they fell, and no one was there to help them.
“Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.

One thing I love about God is that He is accessible.  Even though He lives where we cannot physically see Him (like we would our friends or family), He is still ever so close to us.  He also has a limitless wealth of wisdom and knowledge, and He is willing to share with us!

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you.
He will not rebuke you for asking.
James 1:5

God can be mysterious, but the more and more we grow in relationship with Him, the more and more we can understand Him.  So, go to God and let Him set you straight.

Baked Ziti…Greek Style

This recipe came about because I needed to use up some ground lamb. In our efforts to eat more healthy, quality foods, we have been trying to use better quality meats…especially ground meat.  But sometimes these items come along with a price tag that is steep!  (Y’know?)  Last week, I came across some organic, grass-fed ground lamb at a really good price…oh, happy me!  But even happier hubby—he just loves lamb!  And, maybe because it was cold and rainy, I thought it would be good basis for a real comfort food meal!  Thus…Baked Ziti, Greek Style!

Now, this dish is a little decadent as it has a bechamel (or white) sauce and uses a couple of cups of ricotta. However, the other cheeses included only add up to four (4) ounces. Just be sure to use really flavorful cheese, and grating it yourself will give you a nice melting product. So this dish fit well into our ‘healthy but oh-so-yummy’ POV since it has lots of veggies (onions, mushrooms, carrots, tomatoes, spinach) and uses a meat that is of a really good quality.

Let me tell you, this recipe fills a huge casserole! I used a 4quart casserole which holds more than a 9X13 baking dish. And we got 8 generous servings (maybe 6 if you are feeding manly men!) out of it.  Enjoy!

Baked Ziti…Greek Style

ingredients:
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 pound ground lamb
a couple sprigs rosemary (or 1+1/2 teaspoons dried chopped rosemary)
1 teaspoon dried marjoram (or oregano)
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper (I always use a lemon-pepper-salt combo)
1 large onion, finely chopped
6-8 ounces Baby Bella mushroom, chopped small
1 carrot, peeled and finely grated
3 (or more!) tablespoons chopped garlic (I use jarred)
1/2 cup tomato paste
2 cups chicken stock
1 cup dry red win

1 pound macaroni (I used GF rotini)
16 ounce bag of frozen chopped spinach, defrosted
bechamel sauce
2 tablespoons butter
2 rounded tablespoons all-purpose flour (I used GF all-purpose)
1 cup milk (I used coconut milk)
1 cup chicken broth
Freshly ground black pepper
Freshly grated nutmeg (just a bit!)

2 cups ricotta cheese
dried oregano
4 ounces freshly shredded cheese (I used smoked gouda and a really sharp white cheddar)
directions

for the meat sauce:

  • heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat
  • when hot, crumble the ground lamb into the pot, and saute ‘til lightly browned
  • strip the leaves from the rosemary stems (if using fresh herbs) and finely chop
  • season with rosemary, orgegano, s&p
  • once the meat has browned, remove from pan, draining away juices
  • add 1 tablespoon olive oil along with the onion and carrot; saute for 6-7 minutes
  • add the chopped garlic and cook, stirring constantly, for an additional minute or so
  • stir in tomato paste, and cook for another minute or ‘til fragrant
  • stir in broth and wine, bring up to a boil; reduce heat to low and gently simmer ‘til pasta is ready

pasta:

  • prepare pasta according to package directions but UNDERcook by 2 minutes (then it won’t be overcooked after baking)
  • add the defrosted spinach into the pasta water for the last couple of minutes
  • drain the pasta/spinach and add back to the pasta pot
  • toss the pasta with the meat sauce
  • pour the pasta into a large (4 quart) casserole

bechamel/white sauce:

  • melt the butter in a medium saucepan, adding the diced onion
  • cook ‘til the onion is soft and translucent, approximately 5 minutes
  • sprinkle the flour over the cooked onion and, using a whisk, stir constantly for 1 minute; adjust the heat to VERY low and continue to cook for 2-3 minutes to get the starchy taste out of the mixture. do not let the mixture brown
  • increase the heat back to medium and immediately start slowly pouring in 1/4 cup or so of milk while whisking briskly; (just keep whisking!)   as this is absorbed, continue to slowly and steadily add the balance of the milk followed by the broth whisking constantly as the liquid becomes absorbed…this will take about 3 minutes
  • adjust the heat lower again and let this mixture simmer gently for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.  season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg, to taste

to finish:

  • combine the ricotta and dried oregano
  • spoon the ricotta evenly around the top of the casserole, spreading to cover the pasta/meat mixture
  • pour the bechamel sauce in an even layer over top the ricotta; top with shredded cheese
  • place casserole into a preheated 425 degree oven; bake for about 20 minutes or ‘til middle is hot and edges are bubbly

Guidance

Guidance is a word that communicates something for which we often ask.  For example “I need God’s guidance for me to find a spouse…how to do my business…, etc.  Good guidance is when we expect the Spirit of God to take full charge in us and when we listen and discern to what the Spirit is saying.

Whether you turn to the right or to the left your ears will hear a voice behind you saying “…this is the way, walk in it.”
Isaiah 30:21

And when He brings out His own sheep, He goes before them; and the sheep follow Him, for they know His voice.
John 10:4

There are times we seek God’s guidance even though we have already made mistakes in some of our choices.  Before doing anything or embarking on any project we should seek God’s guidance.

When we allow God to guide us:
He will watch over us so that nothing comes against our plans and the plans of God and that the will of God on us will be accomplished. We shall have good success.
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you and watch over you.
Psalm 32:8

He will be our God forever and ever.
…for this God is our God for ever and ever He will be our guide even to the end.
Psalm 48:14

We shall be walking in prosperity all the days of our lives.
The Lord bless you from Zion,

So, where do we get this guidance?  Joshua 1:8 tells us… “in the word of God.”

Do not let this book of the law depart from your mouth meditate on it day and night
so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.
THEN and I say THEN you will be prosperous and successful. (NIV)

(…In KJV the successfulness is connoted as having “good success”.)

Let us make a choice of involving God in everything we do, and seeking His guidance. And also make sure we are guided by the Spirit of God through the Word of God. I know we all need good success.  May God help us!

He Has Made Me Glad

How many of y’all have seen one of the TRANSFORMER movies?  Often I feel like Bumblebee (he is the one that communicates in sound bites).  God drops little “sound bites” into my thoughts.  (Though, sometimes I’m a little slow to catch on.)  While reading this morning, He popped this song into my head.

As I was thinking about this song, I realized that many times when we wake up in the morning, we don’t feel like we have a reason to be glad.  We are still consumed by yesterday’s trials or focusing on the problems the new day might bring.  But Psalm 118:24 (NASB) says

This is the day which the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

And Psalm 145:2 (AMP) states

Every day [with its new reasons] will I bless You [affectionately and gratefully praise You];
yes, I will praise Your name forever and ever.

We may not think, or feel like, we have cause to be glad.  Yet Scripture tells us otherwise.  His Word gives us these reasons:

  • Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning
    Lamentations 3:23 NLT
  • Each day proclaims the good news that He saves
    1 Chronicles 16:23b NLT/ Psalm 96:2
  • But each day the Lord pours His unfailing love upon me,

  • Blessed be the Lord, Who bears our burdens and carries us day-by-day
    Psalm 68:19a AMP
  • Be our strength every morning and our salvation in time of trouble
    Isaiah 33:2b HCSB
  • At daybreak, Lord, You hear my voice

  • Satisfy us in the morning with Your faithful [unfailing] love
    Psalm 90:14a HCSB

His mercies are new each morning and His love is unfailing.  He hears us, bears our burdens, carries us. He is our Strength and our Salvation.  What more could we ask for?  Just one of those should be more than enough to make us glad and cause us to rejoice.  It is when we fix our eyes on this world we forget why He has made us glad. Psalm 143:8a (AMP) offers another reason to be glad:

Cause me to hear Your loving-kindness in the morning,
for on You do I lean and in You do I trust.

Today, as we recognize His faithfulness and place our complete trust in Him, let’s meditate on His goodness and…

The Humble

Psalm 25:9 AMP

As I read this passage, my eye kept returning to the word humble.  Being humble is something I have struggled with.  Not necessarily that I think I am better than anyone, but that I know what is best for them or the best way to handle a situation.

The world’s view of humble and the Biblical view of humble are vastly different.  The world tends to view humility as a weakness, being a wimp. The biblical Greek translation of humble is “a lowliness of mind.”  That doesn’t mean putting yourself down or talking bad about yourself.  As the Pulpit Commentary defines it, being humble means you are “submissive, meek, contrite, teachable.”

Humility is an absence of self. It is a heart attitude…not an act we put on.  A humble person willingly submits themselves to God.  Humility is giving up our desires for the good of another—a willingness to step aside so another can shine.  Being humble means giving up my right to be right in order to do what is right.  It takes a strong person to put oneself aside.

Since God chose you to be the holy people He loves,
you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy,
kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
Colossians 3:12

Now finally, all of you should be like-minded and sympathetic,
should love believers, and be compassionate and humble…
1 Peter 3:8 HCSB

But, why should we be humble?  1 Peter 5:5 (AMP) offers the best reason I can think of:

Clothe (apron) yourselves, all of you, with humility [as the garb of a servant, so that its covering cannot possibly be stripped from you, with freedom from pride and arrogance] toward one another. For God sets Himself against the proud (the insolent, the overbearing, the disdainful, the presumptuous, the boastful)—[and He opposes, frustrates, and defeats them], but gives grace (favor, blessing) to the humble.

I would much rather bask in God’s grace than have God oppose me; wouldn’t you? Psalm 25:9 states that if we are willing to be humble, God Himself will teach us His ways.  I couldn’t ask for a better teacher!  Plus there are so many benefits to being humble:

  • If My people who are called by My name humble themselves, pray and seek My face, and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.
    2 Chronicles 7:14 HCSB
  • I will look favorably on this kind of person: one who is humble, submissive in spirit, and trembles at My word.
    Isaiah 66:2 HCSB
  • Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their hearts. You will listen carefully
    Psalm 10:17
  • The humble will eat and be satisfied.
    Psalm 22:26a HCSB
  • But the humble will inherit the land And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.
    Psalm 37:11 NASB
  • The humble will see their God at work and be glad.
    Psalm 69:32a NLT
  • …a humble spirit will obtain honor.
    Proverbs 29:23b NASB
  • Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

The world may try to convince us humility is a weakness, but all it offers in return is self-satisfaction.  It cannot offer anything that compares to what God offers the humble.  And there is not one of these benefits I am willing to give up.

Father God, we thank You for Your grace.  We thank You for the blessings You are waiting to bestow upon us if we are willing to humbly submit ourselves to You.  What the world has to offer pales in comparison.  Gently remind us when our attitude shifts away from humility.  Continue to help us as we struggle to become humble and teach us Your ways.  In Your Holy name I pray, Amen – It is so!

Breakfast is often said to be the most important meal of the day. The meal is one of many starting points for our days. Some of us eat eggs, bacon, toast, or whatever. Others eat cereal or pop tarts. It just depends on what is in the pantry and different tastes. For some people, it is their favorite meal of the day. Yet, it is not the most important thing on earth.

When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked,
“Who then can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said,
“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Matthew 25:26

Men make meals. Men make things. We, as humans, come together to make wonderful things happen. Yet, we cannot do these things without God. Yet, men cannot save themselves from death. They can join groups of men, but they cannot do what God and His Son and His angels can do.

In the song, Breakfast by the Newsboys, the Breakfast Club (a group of eaters) has lost one of its members. The song illustrates that they are saying goodbye to this person, but that they know that they will see that person again because when they died they were children of God. Using the examples of the breakfast items, the song reminds us that the good things we experience here on earth will not be in hell—the choice we make when we refuse God.

When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we have nothing to worry about. We don’t have to worry about where we are going to spend eternity. Jesus gave His life for us so we may enjoy eternity in His glory and not in the fires of hell. We get to live with Jesus in Paradise.

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for being able to choose to accept You and spend eternity with You. We know where we will be spending eternity—in Your glory. Your love has saved us, and we don’t have to worry about where we will spend eternity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
