God Loves Our Brokenness

SeekingHimLogo

O Lord, You have searched me and known me.
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
You understand my thought from afar.
You scrutinize my path and my lying down,
And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.
Psalms 139:1-3

 *   ~   ♥   ~   ✞   ~  ♥   ~   *

God loves our brokenness. Why? Because it is through our brokenness where He can begin to ‘FIX‘ us. God will

  • F ocus on what is right in us, He will help us build our character to be a reflection of Him
  • I ntends to heal us and will use us as
  • eX amples of His great love and mercy

God will make our sins as if they were not and will use our new life for His glory.  We need to be willing to walk in His ways without fear (Romans 3:21-31).  God will be with us and guide us along His path to righteousness.  Paul tells us that he was ready for the end of his life when he would receive his crown.

in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness,
which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day;
and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.
2 Timothy 4:8

Paul lived his life for God and knew it would be hard.  He did not falter from his path in order to show and tell people of Jesus’ great love.

God will heal us from our past wounds, our past experiences. Some of those may be a result of a curse in our family history. Or it could be a result of our own disobedience to one of His commandments. An example would be if we have not honored our parents. We do not have to agree with how they live, or what they do, but we still have to give them honor for who they are in our lives.  Through grace God can restore those relationships to ones of tolerance and acceptance of who our parents are.

Also, God can use our past to help others to see Him as our Redeemer.  We can know that God will soften our hearts to forgive ourselves and use our lives to win others with similar situations to Him.  We just have to be willing.  We have to allow ourselves to be molded and shaped into what God can use. We will not be perfect; we are human.  But God can use our humanity to reach those who are unsaved.  Just as we have the example of Samson and David, we will be able to reach others with our lives and how God redeemed us from our path of sin and unrighteousness.

Father, thank You for loving my brokenness. I ask that You continue to take away my sins and use me for Your glory and to further Your kingdom. Thank You for not tossing me aside as dross and for choosing to use me to tell others of Your great love. Thank You!  In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen!

King Of My Heart

psalmshymnsspiritualsongskjv

I’m in a war every minute
I know for sure I’ll never win it
I am David up against Goliath
And it’s a fight for my attention
I’m being pulled every direction
This world tells me trust what I can see
Lord, won’t You help me
Believe what I believe

‘Cause You are
Bigger than any battle I’m facing
You are
Better than anything I’ve been chasing
Savior and Royalty
The only Hope for me
Jesus, You are, You are
The King of my heart, heart
The King of my heart, heart

All by myself I fall to pieces
But You are strong when I am weakest
I feel Your Kingdom come alive in me
My feet are bruised but they’ll follow
Where You lead

Your love is deeper than the ocean
You wash away my brokenness
Your arms are always open
Come and rule in me
Come and be my King

You’re the King of my heart, heart
The King of my heart, heart
You’re the King of my heart, heart

I can so relate to this song!  Distractions. They are everywhere; this world is full of them.  Sometimes I feel like Dory in “Finding Nemo.”  My focus flits from one shiny thing to another.  Then BOOM! …Not only am I in a battle to keep my focus on God but now I am caught up in a battle I never saw coming.  One I have no hope of winning on my own.  Classic David and Goliath.  But I am reminded…

This battle is the Lord’s.
1 Samuel 17:47

The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.
Exodus 14:14 HCSB

I love this passage in 2 Chronicles 20, specifically verses 12, 15 & 17 (HCSB & AMP):

…For we are powerless before this vast number that comes to fight against us.
We do not know what to do, but we look to You.
…the Lord says: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast number,
for the battle is not yours, but God’s.
You shall not need to fight in this battle;  take your positions, stand still,
and see the deliverance of the Lord [Who is] with you…
Do not be afraid or discouraged.

I am powerless in these battles.  By myself I fall to pieces.  Yet, all I really need to do is be still because as Deuteronomy 31:8 (HCSB) states:

The Lord is the One who will go before you.
He will be with you;
He will not leave you or forsake you.
Do not be afraid or discouraged.

And 1 Corinthians 1:25 (NIV) reassures me: “For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.”  In my weakness, His strength shines:  “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness’ ” 2 Corinthians 12:9a (HCSB).

All I really need to do is remember Jesus is:

  • Bigger than any battle I am facing
  • Better than anything I’ve been chasing
  • The only hope for me
  • He is the King of my heart!

*   ~   ♥   ~   ✞   ~   ♥   ~   *

Jesus, thank You so much for being the King of my heart!  I rejoice in You.  Thank You for going before me and fighting my battles.  Remind me that I do not have to fight them on my own…I only need to return my focus to You and be still.  In Your precious and Holy name I pray – Amen, IT IS SO!

Psalm 139

You have searched me, Lord, and You know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
You perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
You are familiar with all my ways.

You search me
You know me
You see my every move
There’s nothing I could ever do
To hide myself from You
You know my thoughts
My fears and hurts
My weaknesses and pride
You know what I am going through
And how I feel inside

But even though You know
You will always love me
Even though You know
You’ll never let me go
I don’t deserve Your love
But you give it freely
You will always love me
Even though You know

Captivate Us

psalmshymnsspiritualsongskjv

Your face is beautiful
And Your eyes are like the stars
Your gentle hands have healing
There inside the scars
Your loving arms they draw me near
And Your smile it brings me peace
Draw me closer oh, my Lord
Draw me closer, Lord, to Thee

And captivate us, Lord Jesus, set our eyes on You
Devastate us with Your presence falling down
And rushing River draw us nearer
Holy Fountain, consume us with You
Captivate us, Lord Jesus, with You

Your voice is powerful
And Your words are radiant bright
In Your breath and shadow
I will come close and abide
You whisper love and life divine
And Your fellowship is free
Draw us closer, oh my Lord
Draw me closer, Lord, to Thee

And let ev’rything be lost in the shadows
Of the light of Your face
And let ev’ry chain be broken from me
As I’m bound in Your grace
For Your yoke is easy, Your burden is light
You’re full of wisdom pow’r and might
And ev’ry eye will see You

Captivate us,  Lord Jesus, with You
Captivate us

You have captivated my heart, my sister, my bride;
You have captivated my heart with one glance of Your eyes,
with one jewel of your necklace.
Song of Solomon 4:9

Can you think of anything more awesome than to be captivated by Jesus? I looked up the definition of the word captivate and this is what it said:

to attract and hold the attention of, as by beauty or excellence; enchant

Now imagine that your whole life is centered around Jesus and you are captivated by Him.  The Son of God really is completely in love with you.  So, as you listen to this beautiful song today, I hope that you will close your eyes and just sing this as a prayer to Him.  He is so worthy of such a praise song from you…

Tell Him that His face is beautiful; just picture His eyes focused on you, just you.

Then look at His hands. See the scars? And those nails that were driven into His hands and they drove out the sins of us, His daughters and sons. And in those scars, there is so much healing. Remember the woman that just touched His garment? Oh the power that He holds. Lay all your afflictions down at His feet and allow Him to begin to heal you.

Now let His arms fold you in. Feel His embrace and allow Him to hold you long…it’s okay , y’know. He wants to love on His children and that includes you.

And while you’re in His presence, look up at Him.  See the smile on His face.  See how He looks at you with adoration and joy.  It is time to  let all the cares of this world just crumble and vanish in His presence.

{Oh Jesus, please draw us closer to You. Let all the other things of this world pale in comparison and keep us from putting anything before You, oh Lord.  Let all our chains be broken in Your name.  Break all addictions, oh Lord.  All worry and all spirit of fear replace with peace that only You can give. You are stronger than any burden that we carry, Jesus….}

Friend, if you prayed this song today, I am so glad! Jesus wants to captivate us, and be so big in our lives that He is the first and last thing we think about. That during the day—when burdens stack up—that we are quick to give them to His capable hands.  He is waiting and watching and hoping to get some time with you today…I pray He consumes you, friend!

 *   ~   ♥   ~   ✞   ~  ♥   ~   *

Dear Jesus, we echo the prayer above today.  Oh Jesus, we come to You today wanting to be captivated by You.  We want to put all earthly things aside and just dwell in You.  I pray that the things of this world will become so small in the presence of our big Savior.  Thank You for Your arms that hold us and for Your smile that warms us and for Your nail-scarred hands that stretch out to pull us close.  Keep us focused on You.  In Your name we pray, amen.

This Week…Psalms 9:9-10

SeekingHimLogo

The Lord also will be a stronghold for the oppressed.
A stronghold in times of trouble;
And those who know Your name will put their trust in You.
For You, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.
Psalms 9:9-10

This week, here on the Seeking Him devotional blog, we have been focused on the Truth that our wonderful God and Lord is our Stronghold and never forsakes those (us!) who seek Him.  Our devotional writers have shared these promises given in this week’s passage through the devotionals they have written.  Here are a few of their thoughts….

In Blessings Are Better, Ahmee shared a really good perspective….

Here’s a thought: instead of asking God to give you money, why not ask Him to show you how to biblically manage your money so that you are better equipped to avoid money shortage situations.  Here’s another thought: instead of asking God for a better job, why not ask Him to show you how to appreciate the one you have.  My pastor told us that miracles are nice, but blessings are better.  At first I didn’t get it, but he explained that miracles go against natural happenings.  You know…the impossible.  Blessings go with natural happenings, i.e., blessed with a promotion for your great work or money in savings because you managed it correctly.

So, are you asking God to do all the work? Or are you willing to do your part?
God loves to help.

In God’s Promises, Ann reminded us of the promises made to those who seek God….

Indeed, those who seek the Lord will never be forsaken; that is the promise of God to us.  He also said “Seek Ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness and all these things shall be added unto You”…What is it to seek the Lord?  Seeking the Lord means seeking His presence…having access to Him.  The Bible repeatedly calls us to seek the Lord and to seek His presence continually.

Now set Your mind and heart to seek the Lord your God.
1 Chronicles 22:19

God has made these promises to those who seek Him:
• Deuteronomy 4:29  But if from there You seek the Lord your God, you will find Him if you look for Him with all Your heart and with all your soul.
• 2 Chronicles 7:14   If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
• Proverbs 8:17   I love those who love Me and those who seek Me find Me….
• Luke 11:9   So I say unto you, Ask and it will be given to you, seek you shall find, knock and the door will be opened to you.

In Shelter In God, Tina encouraged us to remember that God is our Refuge and Shelter….

 Shelter
1: a structure that covers or protects people or things
2: a place that provides food and protection for people or animals that need assistance
3: a place to live

Refuge
1: shelter or protection from danger or trouble
2: a place that provides shelter or protection

For those who have grown up in a normal household, you probably have a healthy reality of what a home should be—calm, peaceful, neat, well-groomed…both inside and out. At least I thought this was so.  Growing up for me was not this way…  I learned life was not always fair. But God always provided a way.

I had choices to make: I could either live thinking about what had been taken away from me…or I could give them to God and know He would be faithful to restore them back to me.  So I made those choices, everyday, to live (and still do).  I do not always succeed but I do my best.  God is my Shelter and my Refuge.  He is the one I am learning to run to for all things. Not to others, but to God first.

Sinking Deep

psalmshymnsspiritualsongskjv

Standing here in Your presence
In a grace so relentless
I am won
By perfect love

Wrapped within the arms of heaven
In a peace that lasts forever
Sinking deep
In mercy’s sea

I’m wide awake
Drawing close
Stirred by grace
All my heart is Yours
All fear removed
I breathe You in
I lean into Your love
Your love

When I’m lost You pursue me
Lift my head to see Your glory
Lord of all
So beautiful

Here in You I find shelter
Captivated by the splendor
Of Your face
My secret place

Your love so deep
Is washing over me
Your face is all I seek
You are my everything

Jesus Christ
You are my one desire
Lord, hear my only cry
To know You all my life

(We had the opportunity to see this wonderful group in concert a couple of months ago; the experience was awesome.)  I was working on some things this morning, and felt unrest start to creep in.  Peace is something that has been on the top of my priority list for the last year.  It seems that the more I sought it…and removed things from my life that threatened our peace…the more attacks we felt.  So this morning, when I began to feel unsettled, I started searching for songs…music has a way of reaching areas of the heart that other things can’t.  This song not only creates a sense of peace with the relaxing music, quiet strength, but the words penetrate the difficult place you may find yourself in.  Knowing that we can bask in His love and grace and that He removes all fear and replaces it with peace and His overwhelming love.

Take time this morning to rest in Him.
Rest in His love, mercy and grace.

Let’s pray: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the artists who create these beautiful songs. Songs that remind us of how deeply You love us. Songs that remind us of Your grace and mercy. Lord, I pray that today You wrap Your arms around us, and that we remember You are always near. In Jesus’ name, we pray, amen.

Dear Lord, how blessed we are to be among those who know this Truth!  You have not…You will not…You cannot forsake Your seekers!  For You have promised!  You are so good  to us and we are so thankful.  May we not only hold to this promise but help us to encourage others to remember Your faithfulness and to put their trust in You.  We pray for those who are oppressed and in times of trouble…thank You for being their Stronghold (and ours, too!).  We love You and adore you!  And thank You in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Let Your Kingdom Come

psalmshymnsspiritualsongskjv

Your glorious cause, O God
Engages our hearts
May Jesus Christ be known
Wherever we are
We ask not for ourselves, but for Your renown
The Cross has saved us so we pray
Your Kingdom come

Let Your Kingdom come
Let Your Will be done
So that everyone might know Your Name
Let Your song be heard everywhere on earth
‘Til Your sovereign work on earth is done
Let Your Kingdom come

Give us Your strength, O God
And courage to speak
Perform Your wondrous deeds
Through those who are weak
Lord, use us as You want, whatever the test
By grace we’ll preach Your gospel
‘Til our dying breath

I just love when a song, such as this anthem, stirs my heart and provides me with lyrics to sing out the Scriptures!  (You, too?)

When Jesus was asked by one of His disciples to teach them how to pray, this is what He thought important to include in their prayers (and ours, too!):

And it came to pass, that, as He was praying in a certain place,
when He ceased, one of his disciples said unto Him,
Lord, teach us to pray…
And He said unto them, When ye pray, say,
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
Give us day by day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins;
for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
Luke 11:1ff

Such a simple prayer (thank You, Lord…You know we are really very simple beings!) yet full of deep, foundational truths.  As I sang along to this song, I thought about how Jesus was the One Who brought God’s Kingdom to the earth…and will be the One Who, when He returns as Lord of lords and King of Kings, will fully and completely—forEVER and EVER—establish God’s Kingdom here on earth…as it is now in Heaven.  Glory!  HalleluJAH!  Praise You, Jesus!  Thank You, Father!

The prophet Jeremiah spoke the prophecy of Jesus’ first coming to the earth:

“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch;
And He will reign as king and act wisely
And do justice and righteousness in the land.
In His days Judah will be saved,
And Israel will dwell securely;
And this is His name by which He will be called,
‘The Lord our righteousness’ ”
Jeremiah 20:5 and 6

Daniel also spoke prophetically of the Kingdom to come:

But the saints of the Most High shall receive the Kingdom,
and possess the Kingdom forever, even forever and ever.
Then the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven,
Shall be given to the people, the saints of the Most High.
His Kingdom is an everlasting Kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey Him.
Daniel 7:18, 27

When God sent Gabriel to Mary, the angel spoke these words about Jesus and His Kingdom:

“…He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High;
and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David;
and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever,
and His Kingdom will have no end.”

Luke 1:32 and 33

And much was told to John in the vision given to him (the Book of Revelation), including this passage among many, many others:

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth;
for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.
And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,
made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.
And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying,
“Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men,
and He will dwell among them,
and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them…”
Revelations 21:1-3

These truths are such comfort and encouragement to us as we live in this dark, and increasingly darker, world.  But we must remember to pray…daily…as Jesus instructed.  And we must keep our hearts set toward God as we anticipate Jesus’ return and His everlasting Kingdom!

Sovereign God,

Thy cause, not my own, engages my heart,
and I appeal to Thee with greatest freedom
to set up Thy Kingdom in every place
where Satan reigns;
Glorify Thyself and I shall rejoice,
for to bring honour to Thy name is my sole desire.
I adore thee that Thou art God,
and long that others should know it, feel it,
and rejoice in it.
O that all men might love and praise Thee,
that thou mightest have all glory
from the intelligent world!
Let sinners be brought to Thee for Thy dear name!
To the eye of reason everything respecting
the conversion of others is as dark as midnight,
But Thou canst accomplish great things;
the cause is Thine,
and it is to Thy glory that men should be saved.
Lord, use me as Thou wilt,
do with me what Thou wilt;
but, O, promote thy cause,
let Thy kingdom come,
let Thy blessed interest be advanced
in this world!
O do Thou bring in great numbers to Jesus!
let me see that glorious day,
and give me to grasp for multitudes of souls;
let me be willing to die to that end;
and while I live let me labour for Thee
to the utmost of my strength,
spending time profitably in this work,
both in health and in weakness.
It is Thy cause and Kingdom I long for,
not my own.
O, answer Thou my request!

Shelter in God

SeekingHimLogo

The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed,
    a stronghold in times of trouble.
Those who know Your name trust in You,
for You, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek You.
Psalms 9:9-10

 Shelter  –

1: a structure that covers or protects people or things
2: a place that provides food and protection for people or animals that need assistance
3: a place to live

Refuge  –

1: shelter or protection from danger or trouble
2: a place that provides shelter or protection

How wonderful is our God! He strives to be our Friend, our Provider, and our Refuge.  All we have to do is ask.  We may say that is easier said than done, but trust me, it can be.

For those who have grown up in a normal household, you probably have a healthy reality of what a home should be—calm, peaceful, neat, well-groomed…both inside and out. At least I thought this was so.

Growing up for me was not this way.  I started out pretty okay. My birth parents gave me up for adoption at an early age. My maternal aunt and uncle adopted me. They had just lost a child and knew that my mother was not able to care for me. So they raised me as best they could. I had clothes to wear, food to eat, went to school. But I always felt different.

They were able to have another child, a boy, and we grew up as brother and sister.   Dad set Mom up with a store when we moved to another city.  We lived in an old building with the store in the front and living space in the back.  It was our shelter, our refuge.  I learned life was not always fair. But God always provided a way.  I learned to forgive and know God gives people choices in their actions.  I learned guilt, shame, disgust and dread there. But I also learned about God’s provision. I learned God was always there. Every tear I cried, God cried. Every thing I did wrong, God was there shaking His head. Everything done to me, He cried and cheered when I forgave.

I was saved in a  little country Baptist church and was baptized.  I learned about Jesus and this truth:

For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish,
but have everlasting life.
John 3:16 KJV

I learned about Lottie Moon and Corrie Ten Boom and about missionaries.  I learned about performing with puppets; I sang in the choir and did 4-H things with school.  But I also learned what it was like to be excluded.  I was not exposed to drugs or went to parties where those things were.  God protected me although I did not always see it.

If there is someone who can help in my situation, I would pray for God to point me in this person’s direction for help and guidance.

Beginning today, let us have a new attitude. Let us learn from our past. Let us choose to give it all to God.  Let us learn to live the life God has intended for us.  Let us pray for peace in our lives.  Let the Holy Spirit give us what we need to overcome any obstacle which presents itself as a roadblock. We can have happiness; though, at times, we may have to seek it more intentionally.

*   ~   ♥   ~   ✞   ~  ♥   ~   *

Father, send Your Holy Spirit so we can see how Your light, Your provisions, Your grace and mercy is always present in our lives.  Teach us Your ways.  And show us how to be better followers of Jesus and selfless in how we are to walk.  Thank you for Your Word—your instruction manual for our lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Garlicky Green Beans and Pignoli

Who has memories of sitting with their gramma or favorite aunt and snapping green beans?  Such a simple, enjoyable way to accomplish a task that takes time AND have a great conversation.  Oh, and the end result? A big pile of fresh veggies just waiting to be prepared in the simplest of ways.  And truly it didn’t matter whether they were boiled or steamed or roasted (or microwaved…!), they were DELISH!!!  Just remember—only snap the stem end NOT the end with the little tail!  😉

The recipe I am sharing today uses a pile of green beans which have been steamed for just a few minutes. Click here  for a few ways to steam any veggies.  Meanwhile a simple sauce (yet VERY flavorful!) is prepared.  This sauce could also top any variety of fresh veggies…perhaps some broccoli or zucchini or carrots, even. And it all fits nicely within our healthy but oh-so-yummy POV, too! Enjoy!
