Girls With Swords: Chapter 2 – “A Sword Is Born” (pgs. 17-19)

(Your Reading assignment for this week can be found HERE)

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1, NLT, emphasis mine).

Lisa Bevere begins by discussing the origin of swords and how they are found throughout the Bible. As I prayed and sought the Lord’s leading in what He wanted me to write about today, He only gave me these verses and a few words. I think they are enough. His Word is always enough.

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through Him, and nothing was created except through Him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and His life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it (John 1:1-5, NLT, emphasis mine).

So the Word became human and made His home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen His glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son (John 1:14, NLT).

Jesus is the Creator and Sustainer of all things. The Bible tells us that He existed with the Father before the heavens and the earth were created. His presence brings light in the darkness, which can never go out. His Word (the sword) speaks of His deep and abiding love for us—for all time. He loved (and loves) us so much that he became fully human, experienced the sufferings of life, and died a sinner’s death on a cross. His love is unwavering and true. He loves even those who do not love Him. Jesus is love. Love eternal.

Let’s Pray:

Father God, You are the giver of life, the One who loves each of us beyond comprehension. Lord, help us to accept that love today. Use us to reach the hearts of those who are doubting, questioning, or struggling. Fill us with Your Spirit of love and enable us to show that love to someone else today. We love You, Father. Amen.

  1. What a beautiful word to start the day after Easter! Because of Christ’s LOVE the promise of Easter is for everyday for all who trust in Him.

  2. Jesus became human and experienced the sufferings of life, yet he was sinless. He died on the cross for our sins. How much more can someone love us? I have to ask myself this question. As much as I love my family; and I do very much, and I often say I would give my life for them, but would I? Would I literally be able to endure the pain, like Jesus did to die for the sins of the world? Truthfully, I don’t think so. Then I think, do we really know what love is? God is Love, so until we know and Love God, and we Love like God loved us; it is then we know what REAL LOVE IS!

  3. Tonya Tucker says

Everything we need or will need is hidden in His Word, and we search it out like buried treasure!!
    The (S)WORD is present.t.

  4. Teresa Bolme says

I agree with Tonya and with Jen. The Word is all we need and the only place to start. We have to get to know the Word and the author of the Word. March On!

  5. I look at this post, and I think about how we sometimes try to make things so complicated, when in reality these things are so very simple. I recently read a quote (don’t remember who wrote it), but it said “God said it. I believe it. That settles it.” It should just be that simple!! He said it, I believe it, that settles it…..period, over and out.

Why do some try and make things so very complicated!?!? It’s a matter of choice. You either believe it, or you don’t. That’s all there is to it. Hot or Cold. No Lukewarm. Take it or Leave it. So very simple…

    • Michelle Stevens says

We get caught up in our own routine and we try do things our own way and not Gods way! We make things complicated because we don’t trust or want to wait on God.

    • Jennifer says

Yes, Christi. We try to make it so very complicated don’t we?

  6. Amen Jennifer HIS WORD most definitely is ALWAYS ENOUGH!
    Thanks for keeping it simple:)

  7. Proverbs 4:20-22 (NLT)
My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.

  8. Jennifer, it is just that simple, isn’t it. Enough said; great thoughts on just the way it is. Christie, I read that same quote that you wrote, with a little add on to it: God said it. I believe it. That settles it.” Whether I believe it or not, that still settles it.”

  9. For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the ideas and thoughts of the heart. -Hebrews 4:12 (HCSB) – when I read this version I get chills – living and effective what more can we ask for – knowing & believing God does know us and has a plan beginning with our salvation through Jesus and culminating with our coming face to face with him in Heaven. May we carry our (s)WORDS every we go.
