{"id":8845,"date":"2013-02-05T00:01:19","date_gmt":"2013-02-05T05:01:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/girlfriendscoffeehour.com\/?p=8845"},"modified":"2013-02-05T15:26:17","modified_gmt":"2013-02-05T20:26:17","slug":"crazy-love-chapter-5-serving-leftovers-to-a-holy-god-pgs-88-90","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/girlfriendscoffeehour.com\/wordpress\/2013\/02\/05\/crazy-love-chapter-5-serving-leftovers-to-a-holy-god-pgs-88-90\/","title":{"rendered":"Crazy Love: Chapter 5 &#8211;  \u201cServing Leftovers To A Holy God\u201d (pgs. 88-90)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Poor Rich People<\/b> is what Francis Chan is talking about on pages 88-90.\u00a0 He begins this section with a story about a young man name Ronnie from Uganda who is <b>poor, as well as blind<\/b>.\u00a0 Ronnie\u2019s closest friend is a girl who is <b>deaf.<\/b>\u00a0 But, what stands out about these two isn\u2019t that they are handicapped or very poor, but that they are totally content and <b>in love with Jesus. <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">In the following paragraphs, I agree with Chan\u2019s thoughts in regards to our society being filthy rich in comparison to poverty-stricken countries. \u00a0Chan goes on to say that, in reality,<b> being rich is a serious disadvantage spiritually<\/b>.<b> <\/b>\u00a0He then points out that WilliamWilberforce, an English politician and philanthropist in the 1700-1800\u2019s said, \u201c<b>Prosperity hardens the heart<\/b>.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">With all due respect to Mr. Chan and Mr. Wilberforce, their statements disturbed me. And yet, the scriptures in Luke 18:22-24 clearly point to the words of Jesus when He told the wealthy person to sell all he had and give to the poor, and he would have treasure in heaven, then &#8220;come, follow me.\u201d\u00a0 But, the man chose not to do so, and walked away.\u00a0 Jesus responded:\u00a0 \u201c<i>How hard it is for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God!\u201d\u00a0 <\/i>He said (verse 25) it is\u00a0easier for\u00a0a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">I wanted to get a handle on the statement Mr. Chan, and Mr. Wilberforce made, as well as what the above Scripture was saying.\u00a0 So, hang with me while I talk this out with you and, above all, ask God to clarify it for you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">First of all, I believe that an entire doctrine cannot be based on one scripture, such as Luke 18:22-25.\u00a0 Jesus did say that, but the Bible also says in 3 John 1:2:\u00a0 \u201cI wish above all that you prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers.\u201d\u00a0 So, it appears as though God does want us to prosper in our soul, as well as in health and financially.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Now let\u2019s take a look at another scripture in regard to wealth in 1 Timothy 6:10.\u00a0 \u201cFor the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.\u201d\u00a0 Now, didn\u2019t that say the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">love of money<\/span>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Think about this:\u00a0 Could it be that the rich man\u2019s (Luke 18) soul was not prospering, not because he had wealth, but because of his love of money?\u00a0 Could it be that his soul was not prospering, not because he had wealth, but that his wealth had him?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The old saying:\u00a0 \u201cYou can\u2019t come back from where you ain\u2019t been,\u201d is why I felt so compelled to look at the topic <strong>Poor Rich People<\/strong> from another angle by sharing a personal experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">You see, I was put through the test about 20 years ago with those very words from Jesus:\u00a0 \u201cCome, follow me.\u201d\u00a0 Without going into all the specifics and details, to follow Him meant leaving the teaching profession I had been in for years&#8230;a job I dearly loved.\u00a0 I was okay with that but, to follow Him meant facing other issues also.\u00a0 So, I made my excuse list to God.\u00a0 For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Your timing is all wrong; ask me again in 10 years, and I will follow You.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">What You are asking is way out of my comfort zone.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">It will bring opposition, and I don\u2019t like facing conflict.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I went to college for four years to be a teacher.\u00a0 Sounds like such a waste to give all that up.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Public schools need Christian teachers like me.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">My identity will be gone; I will not be able to call myself a teacher.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">And besides, and besides, and besides&#8212;the list went on and on.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p align=\"center\"><b><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">These things were hardening my heart.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The beauty of all of this was that God kept pursuing me to follow Him, even in the midst of all my excuses. \u00a0I have to believe it was that Crazy Love for me that Mr. Chan talks about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">One of the scriptures that finally helped me make my decision was:\u00a0\u00a0<i>Today<\/i> <i>I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses.\u00a0 Now, I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make.\u00a0 Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!\u00a0 <\/i>(Deuteronomy 30:19 NLT)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">May I quickly point out that we are no longer under the curse, so I knew that God was not going to cause a great calamity to come upon me if I chose not to follow Him. So, I began to see that He had a plan for my life, and He had a path He wanted me to go down in order to fulfill that plan.\u00a0 But,<em> it was up to me to make the choice. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">And, yes, I answered His call to \u201cCome, follow me,\u201d and turned in my resignation and started my journey.\u00a0 My journals are filled with that time period in my life.\u00a0 If I may borrow a phrase from Mr. Chan:\u00a0 &#8220;It was CRAZY!!!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">In conclusion, I\u2019d like to offer my own <b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">personal opinion<\/span><\/b> about what <strong>Poor Rich People<\/strong> means:\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Our heart can be hardened by things other than wealth.\u00a0 Mine was.\u00a0 Only as I humbled myself before the Almighty God to trust where He was leading me, did I become Rich in Spirit. And may I add:\u00a0 <em>He is still working on me in other areas to become \u2018more rich\u2019 in Him<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">************<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong>Let\u2019s Pray:\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Father God, first of all, we open our hearts to the convicting power of the Holy Spirit to show us where our hearts might be hardening.\u00a0 We ask Your forgiveness, and help us to turn from those things and follow You.\u00a0 In Jesus&#8217; name I pray, Amen.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><strong>Your Assignment:\u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Do you see anything that has hardened your heart?
