\u00a0I think the link between the two is in one definition of the word<em>\u00a0faith&#8212;<\/em>we have a need, and we turn to God to fill it. \u00a0In other words, we put our <strong>hope<\/strong> in His power and compassion, and we <strong>wait<\/strong> for His perfect timing. \u00a0David writes on this often in the Psalms:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Psalm 27:14<\/b><br \/>\nWait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Psalm 130:5-6<\/b><br \/>\nI wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the reasons I love the hymn &#8220;Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus&#8221;. \u00a0It perfectly describes not a tiny baby in a manger, but instead the Savior&#8217;s mission, His whole reason for being: \u00a0to deliver us from our sins, and from captivity (of all kinds). \u00a0All we have to do is wait for Him.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\">Come, Thou long expected Jesus,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\"> Born to set Thy people free;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\"> From our fears and sins release us,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\"> Let us find our rest in Thee.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\"> Israel&#8217;s strength and consolation,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\"> Hope of all the earth Thou art;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\"> Dear Desire of every nation,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\"> Joy of every longing heart.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\">Born Thy people to deliver,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\"> Born a Child and yet a King,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\"> Born to reign in us forever,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\"> Now Thy gracious Kingdom bring.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\"> By Thine own eternal Spirit<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\"> Rule in all our hearts alone;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\"> By Thine all-sufficient merit,<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\"> Raise us to Thy glorious throne.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus<\/em> ~ Prichard\/Wesley; sung by Ashley Spurling<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vRAFQCOkjgE\" height=\"315\" width=\"420\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The hymn shows our relationship to God: \u00a0we are weak, and He is strong. \u00a0We are tired and can&#8217;t go it alone, so Jesus was born to deliver us, give us rest, and console us. \u00a0We are captive to sins and fears, so God sent His son free us.<\/p>\n<p>I love the Christmas carols that show the innocence and fragility of a newborn baby, and how amazing it is that God poured Himself into such a fragile vessel. \u00a0<em>This<\/em>\u00a0song is <strong>not<\/strong> one of those! \u00a0This is a song about a Hero, a Man with a Plan. \u00a0This carol shows Jesus&#8217;s purpose in His life&#8217;s ministry, and how He fulfills the promises God has made to His people.<\/p>\n<p>I like the dual message in this hymn, as well. \u00a0&#8220;<em>Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus<\/em>&#8221; is a Christmas carol, describing the birth of the Messiah &#8212; but it also is a plea for the second Coming! \u00a0We light the Candle of Hope&#8212;the Candle of Waiting&#8212;and we have faith that the Lord will keep His promises today, just as He kept them to Israel when he sent The Savior. \u00a0We have faith in the blood of the Lamb who washes our sins away, and we wait for Him to come again! \u00a0Hallelujah!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #bf0c22;\">* * * * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Please pray with me: \u00a0Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son. \u00a0Thank You for sending a Hero to save us from ourselves. \u00a0Strengthen our faith as we wait, and help us to continually seek You and praise You and be Your hand in this world. \u00a0Come, Thou long-expected Jesus, come! \u00a0In His Holy name, Amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first candle in the Advent wreath is the Candle of Hope. \u00a0This past Sunday my pastor referred to it, interestingly, as the Candle of Waiting. \u00a0How are &#8220;Hope&#8221; and &#8220;Waiting&#8221; related?
